WERS fixes the analog/digital HD Radio delay

File under: for what it's worth

WERS has started delaying their analog audio to match the digital. It's not quite perfect, at least not on my Sangean HDT-1...there's a slight phase variance when the transition happens. But it's a lot better than "jumping back in time" and hearing the last 5 seconds or so of programming again. :) With this fix, I believe WGBH is the last HD FM station in Boston that hasn't time-delayed their analog to match the digital, but that's supposed to happen soon (when the FM studios move to Brighton Landing).

WERS HD-2 is still a significantly delayed (and VERY quiet) repeat of the main audio signal. I'm still keeping my fingers crossed for a reciprocating broadcast deal with WICN. ;D

Looks like they are wiating for something for their HD-2. Also could they replace the Reading Radio Service from SCA to HD-3?
Cant hear WICN any more inside 128 and in Boston since WSMA..Before with a good tuner you could WICN expect around Newton Centre and Chestnut Hill...

If the analog is on delay to match up with the digital signal, does that mean that the dj doesn't monitor the air signal in the studio any more?

I agree that WICN lost boston ground when wsma came in. Thankfully, I can't hear wsma either. Actually, driving to rhode island the other weekend from boston, i never got in wsma at all, though I checked every now and then. I know that's not a coastal trek, and they have a weird pickup pattern, but I thought i'd hear it somewhere south of here. I wondered if they were even still broadcasting.

I work at a station with HD, and they installed a circuit that switches our monitor from "air" to "program" when the mic is turned on.

Or, some of us just listen in "program". We have silence alarms that go off if we lose audio or go off the air for any reason.

That's right. And my preference has always been to listen to the air monitor. The station I'm working at now supplies the post-process feed back into the board monitor. It's a bit better than listening to "program" but, to my ears, not nearly the same as air.
