WESC 92.5

Can barely hear it in Brevard, too. It used to be one of the strongest stations on the dial since its tower is just 20 minutes down the road. It's been like this for a couple of weeks now I think.
 
WESC's antenna on Caesar's Head was damaged beyond repair during the last ice event in the mountains. The new antenna is being delivered this weekend and will installed over the next week. Signal should be better than ever.

In the meantime, WESC is broadcasting from a 600 foot tower in Greenville at 100kw.
 
I assume they are temporarily transmitting from the 660 site, which was also the location of WESC's FM transmitter for many years until the current stick near the NC/SC line was put into service. The tall tower at the 660 site still had the FM antenna on it and I had always wondered if CC had kept it fire-uppable as a backup for 92.5. In the early days before the tall tower was built at the 660 site, 92.5 transmitted from the short guyed tower.
 
Interesting...That make sense because I was in Greenville a few days ago and it sounded perfect. I will be happy to get it back here in the mountains.
 
When 92.5 was off the air during the move from WHLZ wheels to whatever it is in Charleston now it was off the air for a little over a month and during that time you could drive just about anywhere around the Elloree/Santee area down to St. George and listen to WESC without any trouble at all. Thats a good long distance signal.
 
Bobs and Gatekeeper. Both of you are correct. WESC maintains the transmitter and equipment at the site on White Horse Rd. for circumstances just like this one in addition to having two full power functional transmitters on Caesar's Head. I can remember listening to WESC at Myrtle Beach before WHLZ raised it's tower. It really is an amazing signal.
 
During my tenure as the Chief Engineer of WESC and then co-owned 93.3 The Planet we ran the White Horse Rd site a few times. It was very nice to have a full power backup site. One interesting aspect of it was we'd get tons of complaints from Planet listeners around Greenville over towards Clemson who were getting nailed by the nearby 100kw Greenville site when it was on. Occasionally some bright bulb would push enough remote control buttons in a panic to turn on both sites and you'd never notice in Greenville itself. Get a ways out and ... ewwwww heheheh. I did like the drive to Caesars Head though, was out of cellphone range at the time. No "Drop what you're doing and come fix [enter name here]'s computer NOW!!" calls. (grin) Cell dead zones do have their uses occasionally.
 
We've had several days of bad weather. Wind, rain, wind. The new antenna should be alive on Friday afternoon, weather permitting and hoping that no damage occurred to the feed line when the old antenna arced itself to death and burned several holes in the inter-bay lines while it was raining. :eek: Jim Graham

RE: I can hear WESC in Asheville now. Is the antenna repaired?

The WESC FM antenna on Caesar's Head was replaced. The new antenna was placed on line around 6 PM on Thursday, 2-28-08. Jim Graham
 
The transmitter and equipment on White Horse Road is maintained as radio Engineers would maintain any equipment. It's an alternate site, so it's not going to get primo attention. The antenna on that tower is older, but is not subject to the lightning strikes and weather conditions you will find on Caesar's Head. It's uses is minimal, but important.
