1490AM WESL East St. Louis has dropped their longtime Classic Soul format in favor of Fox Sports Radio, as Fox Sports Radio 1490 WFFX.

According to the St. Louis American, longtime staffers arrived last week to locked doors, and were dismissed without notice. WESL had been a fixture in the African-American community since the 70s.

1490AM is Co-Owned with 1380AM KSLG "1380 ESPN" by Simmons Media.

With Fox moving to 1490 to get full clerance, competing KFNS "590 The Fan" will need new overnight programming.
 
590 went with Sporting News Radio. SNR is awful.

1490 WFFX is starting a new local morning show on Monday with Howard Balzer and Andy Strickland. They will simulcast this morning show on 1380ESPN until September 15th.

On September 17th, a new morning show begins on 1380ESPN, and Balzer and Strickland will remain on 1490.

It will be nice to have three choices for sports in the morning.
 
What a cruel way to find you don't have a job by coming to work and finding the doors locked, especially if you're one of the long-time staffers. Great way to acknowledge dedication, huh? BTW, the WFFX calls used to belong to a Fox Sports station in Meridian, MS, before it was switched to gospel. Also, isn't there a sports station in St. Louis called the Sports Explosion?

No, that was 1190KRFT before the switch to liberal talk and Steve & DC in the morning. Now they call it the Talk Monster.
 
Met one of the local high school football guys that handles stuff in that relm for 1380 and 1490.. We were recruiting college kids at southeast Missouri college fairs.. As I drove back to campus, I came throught STL to check the "Sports Wars" out... I was really impressed with the local talk show on 1380/ESPN and the clear processing on FOX/1490... This is a great one-two punch.. God, it made me want to get involved!
Horton on the phone about the Cards, the DeWitts, Torre and stuff, and then Doug Woolard at the University of South Florida (AD that was formerly at SLU and a friend of mine from my WCIL-FM days when he was an AD and Basketball Coach in his hometown of Carbondale, IL).... The Fan may be 'blowing in the wind', if they keep this up at 1380/1490..... Can I send my resume??? I was impressed... "Skip" at WYIR/WIKY and Oakland City University....(Assistant AD, jock, pd and play-by-play guy..Oh, and a ref, too)....
