West Coast DX in the Midwest this morning

Pre-sunrise in the midwest in October is usually a good time to go fishing for West coast DX. Here in the Chicago area I tried for KFI, but no luck. WMFN was all over it. Haven't heard KFI here since the mid 90s. However, at 6:58 CDT heard a strong KNX with weather & traffic--"90s in the valley today".
Also heard a very strong KOA & WOAI under semi-local WRTO.
 
Awesome! I haven't heard KNX yet this year. This really does seem to be the magic time to hear these California stations from the midwest. Take advantage of it while you can!
 
Here's a tip for bringing in KNX, if 1070 is a jumble, try to listen for the Tone before the traffic reports. Can someone post the audio of that?
 
This morning I finally pulled in KFI over WMFN here in the Chicago area. First time I've heard KFI here since the 90s. Got a very good ID at 7AM CDT.

Definitely listen for the tone. That tone cuts through the jumble like nothing else. It's what helped me confirm KNX from Coldwater, MI last January. I thought I had heard 'the tone' a few times before that, but I always tried to tune in at the 5's :)05, :15, :25....) and it finally paid off one time. From 1,890 miles away they are my current distance record on AM!

I'm currently trying for KNBR. A little harder due to WSCR I-BLOC. I hear ESPN programming and sometimes it blasts in, but never with an ID until yesterday morning. It ended up being WMPS from Memphis, TN. Not KNBR, but a new log anyways.

Next on my list is CBU from Vancouver. This is made almost impossible due to WLW's severe I-HASH. I can barely hear something on 690 with my radio pointed in the direction of Vancouver, but it's never strong enough to ID.
 
I have heard KNX several times in the past six months, it's a regular around here. As for 690, CBKF Gravelbourg, SK has been heard several times (in French, can't miss it since CINF left the air). And WIST from New Orleans has been a regular, and supposedly is still on low power of 1.25 kW non-directional nights.
 
didn't hear KNX this morning (too early)...but got a clean ID from WDIA...
not a normal catch here in NashVegas
 
680 in Memphis is actually WMFS-AM which is a simulcast with WMFS-FM.

Pretty cool you caught them since they send almost every drop of juice SSE at night.

The WMPS calls now reside at 1210 in Memphis.
 
Tried for KNBR once again this morning. There was too much 680News from Toronto.

I turned it to 690 to try for CBU and got relog KTSM from El Paso, TX. They were fairly strong this morning, probably the strongest i've heard them up here.

I did manage one new log. WKFN 540 from Clarksville, TN in with varying intensity with ESPN Radio.
 
Here's a brief recording of KNX-1070, including the traffic. I recorded that on my Tecsun PL-380 with the Select-A-Tenna a little after 4pm on 7-20-2010, and it was pegging the received signal strength indicator at 63,25. KNX is about 111.02 miles from me at a heading of about 313.53°, and part of the path is over saltwater. They come in almost that well even barefoot without the Select-A-Tenna, as well. Interestingly, KNX is actually typically a few dB stronger (depending on where I am in the house or yard - one spot KFI reads 45dBu (not the actual field strength measurement of course) and KNX reads 51dBu on my PL-380, and another spot they're both about 43-44dBu or so) than KFI-640 here in the daytime, even though KFI is 12 miles closer. BTW, How often do you hear a newscaster give the legal TOH ID mid-newscast (or whatever that was), rather than play a pre-recorded TOH ID?

That's how I was able to ID it when I snagged it earlier this year. No identifiable audio other than that clear sounder. KNX has a fantastic nighttime signal, so even when the rest of the audio gets swallowed up in the mess, the sounder can still get through.

Well, I take it back. For the last half hour, KNX has been pounding into Michigan tonight, 10:00pm EST. They are head-to-head with WDIA Memphis playing urban music - a new one for me. No sign of CHOK which is usually dominant here.

DX in the midwest has been picking up in recent nights. The seasons are a changin'
 
From near Boston the 5 Chi "clears" have been MUCH stronger than usual. No IBOC hiss on Cinci 700. Great DX ing conditions..

Thanks for the tip. In general, Cincinnati is a miserable spot for DXing the west coast, and 1070 is no exception. WFNI Indianapolis is directed right at me.

Last night, I did give 1070 a try, and I believe I heard WDIA, which would be the first time I've heard it since becoming a serious MW DXer for yet another time. I'll for and I.D. again tonight.

I was in Austin TX last night. Lousy reception in my hotel, but all 4 ND "clears" were present and accounted for....which would usually not be the case. Particularly notably was WSCR on 670 trashing the Cubans. Usually down there it'd be the other way around.
