West coast Hip-Hop station

Redirecting the topic to this site. I notice that West coast radio doesn't have a real hip-hop station. The only real Hip-Hop station in the west coast is 106.1 KMEL in San Francisco which is the only "URBAN CONTEMPORARY" formatted station in the west coast.

Other radio station like
POWER 106 - Los Angeles
Z90 - San Diego
99.1 KGGI San Bernardino-Riverside
Q104.7 Oxnard-Ventura/San Bernadino-Riverside
POWER 92.7 Palm Springs
103.3 THE VIBE Santa Barbara
95.7 THE BEAT Santa Maria
Wild 106.1 San Luis Obpisbo
102.5 KDON Salinas-Monterrey
HOT 94.1 Bakersfield
Q97.1 Fresno
B95 Fresno
HOT 104.7 Merced-Modesto
K-WIN 97.7/98.3 Stockton-Modesto
102.5 KSFM Sacramento
Wild 94.9 San Francisco
94.9/1005 JAMZ Eugene OR
Wild 107.5 Portland, OR
KUBE 93 Seattle
104.5 JAMZ Spokane
Wild 101.1 Boise
POWER 98.3 Phoenix
101.5 JAMZ Phoenix
HOT 98.3 Tucson
U 92.5 Salt Lake City

are rhythmic pop outlets.

There are a lot of factors as to why there are not that many R&B/Hip-Hop stations in that region, like the African-american population and PPMs.

It's more than just African-Americans. There are whites and Hispanics that support hip-hop and the real hip-hop. Radio stations are just catering to teens and females by playing that Disney-sounded/girly music just for payola. Other than KMEL and KDAY on the West Coast, the rest are worthless to listen to. I prefer my downloaded music.

I truly believe Los Angeles would have still have an urban that would play current hip-hop & R&B if Radio One hadn't gotten their incompetent hands on KKBT. The black population percentage is higher in LA than the SF Bay Area, so it has more to do with the lack of desire on the part of radio station owners than ratings there. Also as btone1035 said, there are whites and Hispanics that listens to hip-hop and R&B music, but the hesitancy of station owners to use a full coverage signal for the format is the reason. Otherwise, KMEL would have long been a figment of the past...

I agree, though WiLD 94.9 and I believe WiLD 107.5 are rhythmic CHRs, they don't call themselves hip-hop stations. The west coast needs a station like Hot 97 NY or even 107.5 WGCI, its sad how radio owners in this region think we don't deserve a real urban station. Most of these stations (especially Power 106) sound like a wannabe B96.

Right because KMEL has never played bad records just for payola ::)
