It struck me this evening that NOAA (National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration) issued a tsunami warning for the Oregon and California coast after a 8.0 magnitude earthquake in American Samoa. The warning which I happened to get through an alert system I subscribed to via e-mail said that an advisory means that a tsunami capable of producing strong currents or waves dangerous to persons in or very near the water is imminent or expected.
Heaven forbid, with all of the main stations in town on automation after 6 p.m. (if not all day!), how would the public be alerted? Through the EAS with their very crackly and distorted statements? What about local information about where to tune for the latest information about San Diego escape routes?
