WEST new format April 2

The Express-Times reports the following about WEST-AM-1400:

1. Last day for local morning show is this Friday.

2. It looks like the station will drop local high school and college sports.

3. The new owner expects to close the deal this Friday.

4. The new owner is supposedly looking at two formats: 50s and 60s oldies and Spanish music, with a new format starting April 2.

I think WEST was a missed opportunity for Maranatha. They should have put a news-heavy format on it, based on co-owned WFMZ-TV. You could hire a small staff to "re-purpose" audio from WFMZ and broadcast it on WEST. They could have kept the local sports reporting and play-by-play.

A link on [EDIT] says that 1470 is also flipping but to an all sports format on April 2. Looks like the religious thing was simply a temporary fix. We will just have to wait and see what happens on both stations come April 2.

Not just WEST -- AM 1470 too

Reported in the Allentown Morning Call today.

As of 4/1 WEST will mostly simulcast WHOL-1600 from Allentown, which is Spanish tropical (salsa/merengue/bachata). AM 1400 will split off for English talk shows on Saturday morning and "Tempo Italiano" on Sunday.

The following day WYHM-1470 drops Christian AC to become Fox Sports 1470. It'll keep Phillies baseball (Opening Day is 4/2) and will also pick up Moravian College sports from sister WAEB-790.
 
are 2 sports stations in a market the size of Allentown going to survive? Allentown already has WEEX. Regarding WEST, this is sad indeed especially for the older people who have aged with this station for the past half century. but spanish does make $$ sense $$
