West Philly Pirate

A new West Philadelphia pirate has sprung up in the past few weeks. Broadcasting over the weekend and on a few evenings during the week on 94.9 mHz, the format is Reggae/Dancehall.

Unlike 'Mike Stone', the commercials are slickly produced, and the audio level is steady.

A web search on the phone number given out over the air-215-780-0482-returns Jenkintown as a locale.

The audio-slightly sub-FM in fidelity-has stopped and resumed-it may be internet delivered.

Anyone else hear this station?

I have a recording I will post via a file-share site.

I thought for a minute the other night is was WRSD in Folsom still on the air. Then I noticed it was coming in stereo. Plus WRSD seems to go off the air around the end of the school day...so it was not them.
Not a Bad signal, was getting it to about exit 3 on I-95.

Its booming in at front and oregon at 8pm, sounds like a local, Jamacian format. I don't think they will have any problems continuing, not being close to any local stations, 94.9 is clear sailing in this area, plus being a minority, no one will dare say anything. I cannot understand why there are no Metal, Rock, Alternative, Country or Standards pirates, I should not say I cannot understand; we all know the REAL facts. If one does come on, I know the FCC would be on them pronto....I do remember a Northeast Philly pirate on 106.3 a few years back and I wrote to Tozzi and told him about it, I don't care for Jazz but I just let him know and he wrote back a few times and told me they would be gone and they were. I don't think Stones garbage is on 97.7 anymore, have not heard that trash for a few years, NOW would have a good case if they did decide to return.

97.7 would not be able to be heard even if it were on the air.

I'm surprised you have no complaints about the unprofessionality of this pirate station compared to what you thought about college radio.
As usual, expect this pirate to stay on the air for years. I guess the pirates will now infest Philly and Trenton, as more will pop up when they realize that the Funny Clown Company doesn't do jack. Must have a decent power to cover at least 12 miles.

Tune around a bit.
In 3 cities infested with pirate stations: Newark, Boston, and Miami, as well as random pirate stations, I have not heard those 5 formats. Besides the dance pirates in Trenton, Indiana, Minnesota, Seattle, and possibly more places, most of the pirates have either Caribbean, reggae, urban, or religious formats. When G-Rock 106.3/5 flipped to Hit 106, not a single alternative rock pirate station popped up.

I did tune around a bit and never heard anything but Jamacian, Hip Hop/Rap, Radical, Carrabean and Third World formats, not aimed at my kind. I do think if any other format but the ones mentioned above came about the Chicken S^*+ FCC would shut them down in a flash, talk about double standards. There was a Country format in Central Jersey a few years back and I heard the FCC was on them in a second. With the new administration <laugh> in place, I think you will see more and more of this garbage on the air as they look the other way.

Now there is a station playing country music on 94.9, but this sounds professional, Bob something or other, I guess there is some legit commercial station on 94.9 but don't know where its from....must be some tropo case.

Look up the ratings on R&R for Boston and New York (Newark)-you will find several of those fomats. By the way, when is the last time in the U.S. was an 'all metal' station on the air?

Religious nutters aside, do you think we need pirates for an overserved and moribund audience?

You must be talking about the oversaturated, repititious, violent, near death, tired, forced fed Hip Hop and Rap formats. Metal/Hard Rock and Alternative audiances are surely not over served in any way, how could they be, when the suits dictate what is hot, even if its not.

You must be a joy at cocktail parties.

They have a website www.caribbean94.com, they identify themselves as Caribbean Music for the People. They do have a clean frequency, with no locals remotely close to them, so they will be here to stay. Very good signal.
