Probably not so amazing. Back in those days, CBC and CTV were pretty much the only game in town, and "Canadian content" rules were only getting started. Flash-forward today, and CBC has basically morphed into a Canadian version of PBS with commercials, with the other networks being top-heavy with US content.

One of the better things to come out of the "Canadian content" mandate was the show King of Kensington with Al Waxman. Very funny show, and very self-consciously Canadian. (One episode featured a young Mike Myers.) You can't find it anymore on YouTube, nor do there seem to be any DVD sets of it.

And let's not forget Red Green.
