Westward Ho Antenna

When the Westward Ho was still a hotel, before senior housing (according to wikipedia), KPHO used the antenna to broadcast the signal from the hotel. Eventually the antenna for KPHO was moved to South Mountain.

Does any radio station or television station still use this broadcast antenna? Or is it just for show?

IIRC, it was the original tower for KXTC 92.3 in the mid '70s. I don't know when they moved from there or what that tower is used for nowadays.

I seem to have read somewhere (not recently though) that the structure was left on top of the building as a landmark but is no longer used to host a functioning antenna.

I always thought it originally was the home of KOY (550) but may be confused.

Nope. KOY's original home was a block or two down Central (and a couple of blocks from 840 N. Central.) We put a plaque in the sidewalk at that street corner on the station's 75th anniversary. Whether or not that plaque has survived redevelopment, I have no idea.

Back when KKFR and KFYI were on First Avenue the STL dishes were on top of the Ho along with some paging antennas. (And to think there's an entire generation who will never understand JJ The King of Beepers...) It hasn't been used for broadcast in ages.

JD-I hoofed it down the street at lunch, and the plaque is still there! Of course, the time capsule is still on the veranda at 840. Looking at the WH tower from my office, the old 92.3 FM antenna is STILL hanging off a leg of the tower. That place is the dirtiest site in the CONUS, I do believe.

You can't spell Westward Ho without "pigeon poop."
