WEXC, Arch pulls the trigger

P

Tuned in the afternoon show, and the DJ (Corey?) is saying that today is the last hurrah for oldies. At Midnight, WEXC flips to the new format.

WEXC Flips July 5

It's now "The New FREAK 107, Today's Real Music". Seems to be mostly hip hop and hard rock, Metallica wannabes. Lyrics weren't blatantly Christian. Canned intros for songs like: "We're the only station brave enough to play this song." Too much static from thunderstorms to see if it's being simulcast on WGRP AM and WLOA AM.

WLOA isn't part of that cluster - it's Catholic, being run by the Buffalo-based folks who also have stations in Attica and Rochester NY and in Scranton.

You're thinking of WANR 1570 in Warren OH...and we'll let Old Akronite take it from there :)
______________

Really, WLOA is now broadcasting "Good Time Oldies WEXC 107". It's WEXC's oldies, minus the DJ's, with all of the same advertisers. They aren't even id-ing the station as WLOA AM 1470, all you hear is "Good Time Oldies WEXC 107". More weirdness from Mr Arch and Mr Glunt. I kid you not, WEXC is now on WLOA, lock stock and barrel.

Indeed...and OA's blog reports Glunt is buying WLOA from the Holy Family folks. How bizarre.
______________

And indeed, Beacon Broadcasting *defines* bizarre. I'm surprised that Arch isn't driving out to the WLOA transmitter site in Hubbard and throwing in an Apologetix cut or two...

The question I had on the blog I'll repeat here: is this temporary or permanent for 1470? I think you had it right in 100K when you said they were stunting. Unless he's just trying to mollify some people, or unless he plans to LMA the station to Bill Henry's group (ex-WEXC/WANR GM), I don't see Glunt putting anything but a religious-oriented format on the station.

I unfortunatly have to agree with you. I have listened to the station since I moved into it's area. Heard it go through a few different canned oldies formats. And was pleasantly surprized as WEXC added live DJ's, and (gasp!) let them play what they and the listeners wanted. It's no wonder WEXC was the number one station in its home county. What's on WLOA now is just another canned format, with the old WEXC id's thrown in. No more "Wow, what's that song" moments. Sad to see such a great little radio station die. I hope Mr. Henry and company find a new home. Also, WLOA has nowhere near the same signal as WEXC. You can hear 107.1 almost to route 306 on US 322. I can't even get WLOA in my house.
