WEXC/Greenville, PA Oldies Format On Life Support - Officially

(Slightly reworded from a message I posted on the Cleveland board:)

Officially filed with the FCC as of last Friday: an agreement to transfer full control of Beacon Broadcasting, Inc., owners of WANR/1570 Warren OH, WEXC/107.1 Greenville PA and apparently still of WGRP/940 Greenville PA, from Michael Arch to Harold Glunt, who owns a Warren-based steel plant equipment supply company called Glunt Industries:

Among the interesting things in there - a call from Glunt that he'll change all the stations' formats to a younger-skewing Christian format (aimed at teens and college age students) no later than 60 days after the transfer is finalized.

Unclear, at this point, is whether that would change the odd mix of Soft AC music and Christian parody rock now running on 1570. I presume 70's soft rock isn't really aiming at teens and college age students, for one. And one could also presume that WEXC/107.1's secular oldies hit the door as soon as Glunt officially takes control of Beacon.

I'm curious as to what the younger skewing Christian format will be. I enjoy lots of Christian rock personally, and would love to see the area have a CCM.

One thing, though, that I'm interested in is if the new ownership will maintain the broadcasting of Pittsburgh Pirate games on 107.1. KDKA comes in okay even as far north as Greenville, but a local station always sounds better. And I'm sure the people north of Greenville would rather listen to baseball on 107.1 then try to pull in KDKA that far north.

Pirates on 107.1 Post Oldies? 940?

From what I understand - and Xnewsie, if he reads the Pgh board, can clarify - Mr. Arch did continue to run Pirates games in the station's last incarnation with a religious format. Though, if I remember right, many of the former sponsors went away...

If they don't run the games on 107.1 after it dumps oldies, maybe they'll stick 'em on 940 AM. That was my guess back when it was still assumed Vilkie (WMVL) was taking 940 over. However, 940 is included in the Beacon Broadcasting control transfer document, and there's some question as to if the approved (11/10/04) sale of WGRP to Vilkie was ever completed. Last I'd heard the station, it was still running the ABC AC format the Vilkie folks put on it, and this was just a few weeks ago.

The other problem about Pirates games on 940, of course, is that you'll have to basically be within a couple of miles of the transmitter to hear them at night...when WGRP pumps out a whole TWO WATTS of power. So, that basically only solves the problem you mention for people within walking distance of Greenville...
