WEZE's ethnic composition....

Some time ago, I recall someone was doubting that WEZE's audience was composed of very manny minorities. I think someone said that it is a station that caters to white Protestants. (Was it Glavin or Strassberg?)

I just saw Arbitron data today that indicates WEZE's audience makeup is 51% Blacks & Hispanics. (49% is "other"....so one can assume that the white listenership is below 49%.)

Does this surprise anyone?
 
WEZE broadcasts many local Boston religious services from all corners of the city and beyond. It's anything but lily-white in that respect. Also, some of our more fervent churches here are largely non-white denominations. Those are the people feeling the spirit and tuning in. So no, it's not too surprising.

Great to have the two stations, and I'm also looking forward to having a Catholic station...
 
I agree that WEZE has much cornered the Christian market in the area, whoever ethnicities of the listeners might be. They serve people regardless of race really, even if the vast majority of their programs are of the Caucasian variety.

What surprises me is that Arbitron would lump into "other" the group that, nationwide, is still the majority (White Christians, which includes White Protestants as well as a large fraction of Catholics). Are you sure that Arbitron doesn't have a category for White or Caucasian? The way you are reporting it, Arbitron's "other" category would include, in addition to Whites: at least one sizable minority: People of Asian origin. And in at least one market--Detroit--there would not seem to be a place for a very significant minority, people of Middle-Eastern origin, most of whom are White but few of whom are Christian. And BTW, don't forget that an Asian category would include not only Chinese but also a very large group of people from South Asia (India, Pakistan, Malaysia etc). These people are neither White nor Black nor Chinese but represent a significant part of the world population and a not-insignificant part of the US population.

The data I have indicates (as Arbitron has always done) the # of Black and Hispanic listeners in their cume.

You can see at the top of this page, Arbitron has always kept count of this.

(Could it be that this is what advertisers care about? Black and Hispanics? I don't think Advertisers have been asking which station cumes the most Asians or Norwegian listeners.) ;-)

In any event, WEZE's total of Black and Hispanic listeners = more than 50% of their audience.

So the assumption that the station caters to white Protestants is not correct.
