WFAA-DT Signal Strength

i live here in Decatur just 55 miles north of the transmitter and i get wfaa at anywhere from 69%-{90% at night}

While I hardly consider myself an expert on HDTV,
I've been told by people in Atlanta that WXIA (analog
11, digital 10) has one monster HD signal as far as Athens,
65 miles away. As I understand it, WFAA-DT is on 9,
so I would think you'd be getting a powerful signal as well,
being 55 miles out.

What I don't know is: does the lower the channel mean
a more powerful signal, as it does in analog? WBBM-DT
in Chicago is on 3 (analog 2), and Chicago viewers claim
the picture is almost unwatchable. OTOH, WAGA (analog
5, digital 27) Atlanta has a very strong HD signal, while
WSB (analog 2, digital 39)'s is so weak people on the fringes
of Atlanta have to watch ABC from a neighboring market.

Can anybody fill me in on the technical problems of HD?

Difference:

WXIA-DT 10: 80 kW

WFAA-DT 9: 18.6 kW

Hope that helps.

Low-VHF (2-6) is riddled with issues with electrical noise and other problems that make stations like WBBM-DT unwatchable, and caused most smart station owners to abandon low-VHF. Upper VHF does have larger coverage with less power, and it doesn't have the issues that low-VHF has, at least they're not as severe.

I think WSB-DT's problem is that their antenna is in a bad place. I know WECT-DT in Wilmington had this problem, they did 525 kW from a side-mounted antenna and most people couldn't receive it, even in Wilmington! They're now doing 95 kW from the same tower and antenna as WWAY-DT and have no signal problems.

WSB-DT has asked to move their antenna to the top of the tower after the analog goes away, so hopefully that will help or resolve the signal issues.
