WFAA Now in 720P?

In January, a rescan of my TV picked up 8.8, duplicating the WFAA main channel. I saw from a Google search that 8.8 is on RF channel 30 in 720p, while 8.1 is on RF channel 8, still at 1080i. However BOTH were 720p then and have remained so.

Don't know why 720p is still popular. Back when HDTV had 26 inch low contrast LED screens, 42 inch plasma displays that were 480p, and 26 to 36 inch 16:9 720p CRTs, The higher frame rate did make sports look better. But today 720p on an 80 inch inch UHD (2160p) screen looks awful

Sports and action movement is better on 720p. 1080i smears bad when the screen changes quickly, especially the background and that happens in sports, etc as the camera pans across...that's why Fox and ABC, ESPN chose 720p...
Also ATSC V3 will correct that...possibly WFAA is getting ready for V3? They need a second channel to maintain V1 for 5 years under FCC rules.

maybe it's the standard for TEGNA O&O stations they had pre-Belo/Gannett Company merger and later spin off as TEGNA.
Nope. For example CBS affiliate KHOU in Houston has been 1080i ever since they launched digital HD in the late 1990s.

BTW it was the publishing arm of Gannett that was spun off into a new entity, but it retained the company name (thus the "new" Gannett.) Tegna is the business and legal successor to the original Gannett. When Gatehouse later bought the new Gannett, the merged company took the Gannett name, so it is now the "new, new" Gannett.:geek:

Since ABC programming is native 720P, it makes sense for WFAA to offer 720P so that they're no longer cross-converting ABC programming.
