WFAA Technical difficulties

Most of News 8 at Six didn't run tonight. Instead, they repeated World News Tonight for the first 23 minutes.

When they came on, they explained they were having audio issues. They did weather and a tease for the 10:00 show and got off the air in time for a break and Entertainment Tonight.

You don't see something that severe on WFAA very often. (And don't think I'm laughing. I've been in their shoes too many times over the years.)

The Gannett stations are are implementing newscast automation, which could have something to do with the technical troubles. A bunch of production staffers have been laid off.

I've heard of at least one audio console that can take about that long to reload it's software and setups.

Automation CAN cause those types of troubles, unless it's implemented well--which includes intensive training and rehearsals. In our case, we didn't lose any staff because of it, and never had an automation-related "disaster-cast." A certain level of automation is necessary to run a modern newscast, with various monitors on the set, graphics, etc.

I bet Gannett will also do a common MC center somewhere...which Nexstar had been doing from Little Rock iirc...I read someone else is planning it as well..so much for local news, etc..and more people laid off from the business
