What the heck happened at Channel 8 on Saturday night? The college football game ran late, as usual, so I was up waiting to watch the news. ABC finishes up its interminable spots and promos, and then we go to - black. Then a short snippet of some story about Texas-OU weekend, which was somebody's errant button push, I'm sure. Then we fade to black, and fade up to David Schecter - and no audio. This lasts about :20, then fade to black, and cut to the WFAA logo slide - which stays up nearly five minutes (or so it seemed to me). Then they go straight to Entertainment Tonight.
Did they have a meltdown in their video playback system? I surmised that perhaps they had to reboot all of their computers (switcher, server, etc.) because perhaps they all decided to go belly-up at the same time. But I haven't seen a meltdown like that since my days in small-market TV. And I don't know if they ran the news after ET, 'cuz I went to bed.
I haven't seen anything else about this, so I'm assuming that nobody stayed up to watch the news on Saturday night (or had more important things to do
). Any theories?
