WFAA Vs. Charter Cable

That will send a lot of folks to FIOS or a dish service.
 
Seems backwards to me.. WFAA ought to pay Charter to occupy one of their channels to carry WFAA's free OTA programming.
 
WFAA/Belo I think are trying to increase their cashflow, seeing that the DMN isnt bringing in the cash they used to..
 
About a decade ago KTRK in Houston had a similar throwdown with T-W cable outside of Houston when I lived there. KTRK was only off for a few days, in its place the cable co put up a scroll with KTRK's phone # and encouraged vievers to call and complain to them. I'm not sure how it got resolved but channel 13 was back in pretty short order.

As far as legal issues, since obviously WFAA is a 'must-carry' signal. Has there ever been a ruling concerning must-carry vs payment for signal?

In the '90s, stations were given the option of choosing must-carry or compensation. Of course, the religious/all-infomercial/shopping stations opted for must-carry. At the time, most cable systems balked at paying for the over-the-air signals. Some agreed to carry a new cable channel in exchange as a sort of compensation. At the time, some cable systems "compensated" the ABC O&Os by agreeing to carry the new ESPN2 channel. Similarly, if I recall, the MSNBC predecessor gained cable slots in exchange for the NBC O&Os in some markets. The now-defunct CBS Eye on People network did that as well. Belo demanded carriage of TXCN in exchange for their signals in some markets if I recall. A number of regional news networks like TXCN got started in a similar way.

1993, to be precise.
 
KXAN pulled the same thing with TW-Austin and another provider a few months ago, there was quite a bit of noise and KXAN finally relented on their demands. I have a feeling the same thing will occur and Belo will relent..
 
In KXAN's case, TW filled the slot with a family friendly Starz movie channel.
I'm sure that eased up the switchboard on the cable side.
We were sad to see it go when KXAN came back.
 
Didnt KEYE get more viewers during that time fred?? ;)

On WFAA/Charter, I have a feeling they'll fill the hole with some sort of quality entertainment, probably in HD....
 
Ohhh. So that's what Mark Cuban was doing over there in Victory Park the other day?! I thought it was a game, but I heard the clarion chit-chat of a few 1000 who saw Cubes sharing a stogie with Delkus. Man, I should have listened. I would have had a scoop in here.

It was also the lead story on KBMT in Beaumont.

There was a little more newsworthiness, since KBTV/4 switched to Fox on 1/1 and with KBMT picking up the NBC affilation (along with ABC), Beaumont would be without 2 affiliates on 1/1 - plus I believe the agreement also adds both ABC and NBC HD signals on TWC (which previously haven't been there...)
