What a slap in the face to Steve McCauley! What are they thinking to bring in Pete to assist and get a commission for plugging the weather bug? Steve has handlked major flooding here before, many times over. Having Pete in DELUTES what Steve does well. Is the News director from "Entertainment Tonight" or "realLife" on MTV?

WHAT??? How is that serving their city of license?

REVOKE, REVOKE!!!!!

Shame on them!

Screw the bottom line, flash flooding is far more important than March Madness.<P ID="edit"><FONT class="small">Edited by randrewsIII on 03/20/06 02:57 AM.</FONT></P>

Re: WFAA's Flood Coverage goes down the drain again.

For the record, CBS-11 did extensive weather cut-ins and ran crawls updating the weather situation throughout Sunday's games. In fact, I got an obscene email from an irate viewer who was upset that we were interrupting his March Madness. Not sure why he thought I was the person he needed to rant to, but since he wrote me personally I responded personally.

As I suggested, probably one of the same nitwits who whined over the preemption of soap operas for 9/11 coverage.

I doubt he'll be watching us anymore, basketball notwithstanding.

As for 8...they're in a very tough position. Troy is nearly an impossible act to follow. Overall, Pete and Steve did a pretty fine job - as did 5 and 4.

I can't think of anything worse to handle early-on in extended coverage than flash flooding. Unlike a tornado, supercell, or a snowstorm, there's no tracking it. Not only is your weather person stuck with radar, rainfall totals, and pretty much nothing else, your assignments editor might send your reporters to a likely spot only to find the big problems are miles away - on the wrong side of a swollen creek. Makes for alot of vamping till the video is up. And this storm was much worse than anyone really anticipated.

Yeah, you are right Jody . God Forbid a basketball game they can watch on the internet or see the results on the internet should be interupted on a televison
station serving its local community. I watched ch.8's coverage again. Kudos to John Mcaa and the reporters in the field. Pete Delkus should have (and needed to) stay home and let Steve McCauley handle it. Pete was more about promoting than he was in reporting. Steve was NOT given much screen time. VERY little. See the writng on the walls guys? See the slapped hand print on Steve's face? The report of a roof collapse around Love field was at a "Gun RAGE" according to the graphic, not the "Gun Range"as reported. Write to "Let me speak to the manager" Dave Muscari will answer you and defend the station, and he never will admit the mistakes they are currently making. Coming up "Morticia"complains how the rain ruined her new doo on "Good Morning Texas".

While the "other" stations in town were sitting on their duffs, namely Mr. Deans Employer KTVT, and of all stations NBC5, WFAA broke in and went live. I do agree that Pete "im Pretty" Deluks wasnt the best person to place in with steve, as it appeared to have all the makings of a c-blocking match. I hope WFAA sees that Steve is the deserving candidate for the chief position and relegates pete back to "benchwarmer", as he's been used to all his life.

The problem with Fox 4 as has been expressed here by others before,it was "embellished" drama kings and queens. Had they reported it straight without the dramatics, they would have done fine.

Actually, you are the only one I see bringing it up again and again. What did they do to stick that bug up your ass? I'm sure they're planning on closing up shop since you're displeased.

Re: WFAA's Flood Coverage goes down the drain again.Part 2

I think Channel 8 did a decent job overall. They stayed with it for the duration, and obviously there was little time to write up scripts for the anchors to use. Good thing Brad Hawkins had Debbie there; she lent a calming influence there that probably wouldn't have happened with Brad on solo. And a good call to get the chopper up and running, as the winds were no doubt too high in some areas, and the next round of storms was bearing down from the west. All in all, I think they did a pretty good job, especially considering that the anchors and weatherguys had to work about two hours straight with no break. Great shots of the back of McCauley's head while Pete did the talking. Steve IS their guy, they just won't admit it. I've got more trust in him than Greg, Pete AND Troy combined. He knows his stuff, and doesn't waste time dumbing it all down for consumer use. When he does his thing, I know not only when and where, but WHY. Part of living in North Texas is that we're all amateur weatherwatchers and self-proclaimed weathermen, and we don't want the layman's version of 'happy weather' or to have it in a cute little nutshell...it just doesn't cut it here.

I was also very disappointed with 11 on Saturday morning. They were the only station (minus 33 as expected) not to cover the implosion of Landmark Tower. How hard would it be? I mean come on, they're already in Fort Worth!

Jody,

You're right, covering flooding is usually a matter of chasing false alarms until the water gets too high. I was one of the local reporters covering the Columbus Day floods in Abilene in 1981 when I was with KTAB, and I can tell you there was a lot of running around in headless-chicken mode until the water stopped rising. (Driving through windowsill-high water in an old Buick station wagon was an interesting experience.)

As far as what I saw on Sunday, I have to admit, I thought KDFW did a pretty good job of covering the floods and keeping everyone informed. Why is it that the anchor who appears the most solid on the air, Richard Ray, is relegated to weekends, while Steve "I Can't Catch My Breath" Eagar is on during the week? At any rate, he, Ron Jackson, and Scott Wallace in Sky 4 did a good job keeping everyone informed until the reporters got to their destinations. KXAS didn't appear to do anything, which surprises me less and less as time goes on. Steve MacLaughlin doesn't appear to care as much about local weather as David Finfrock, and you'd think Finfrock would have come in for something like this anyway. Or maybe I missed it during all my channel-flipping. WFAA impressed me the least, and I have to say I just flat don't like Pete Delkus. Having John McCaa anchoring the coverage helped, but like others on this board I think Steve McCauley should have been given the ball and allowed to run with it. (I did like his "negative tilt," though...kind of like his "McFarlane Signature.")

And I get the feeling this is just the start of things for the spring. <P ID="signature">______________
