WFAN is Not What it Used to Be

Of course it's "not what it used to be." Different hosts will change the way it sounds. They're younger, so they're appealing to a younger audience.

Sports in general is not what it used to be. More about gambling and fantasy leagues. Big salaries. Player personalities.

One could also say radio in general is not what it used to. The audience is spread around to lots of other things, including podcasts.

This is old guy talk. Old people talk about how things are not like they used to be. Benigno is old, tired of the commute, and happier now.

@davideduardo mentioned guy talk being what makes a successful sports station

that’s why back when i was suffering through working at a Fox Sports station because i needed a job, i enjoyed the Steve Czban show…. it was more guy talk and kinda laid back.

i couldn’t stand Jim Rome

Comments from long-time host Joe Benigno in the New York Post

I think the hosts spend too much time talking about non-sports related topics
EVERY commercial radio station exists to super-serve a specific demographic to sell them products. In WFAN's case it is 35-64 year old men. With all of the increased competition from streaming, podcasts, YouTube etc, WFAN could do what WABC and WOR are mostly doing and age to irrelevancy with their audiences or adapt and evolve.

Does it suck to age out of the target demographic a station is serving? Absolutely. But it will never stop happening.

Try having him as your traffic reporter in 1988 during afternoon drive at Y97 in Santa Barbara.

Yes, it's true, even though he won't admit it now.

I couldnt stand his ego and attitude
