WFAN to simulcast on FM

Big news in New York with WFAN simulcasting on FM 101.9 starting in November. WFAN could possibly move off of AM 660 sometime in the future which would leave most of Connecticut without "The Fan". Before Arbitron's PPM started, WFAN would always beat WPOP in the Hartford ratings. The CBS Sports radio network starts January 1, 2013 and AM 660 would most likely be the flagship.

I don't understand why they're buying 101.9 to do this? Couldn't they have changed 92.3 or 102.7 FM instead? CBS already owned those two stations. Throw in AM and TV and they're likely going over their market cap.

Simple: FM's are more valuable than AM's and that trend will not reverse. If you've got the cash, you'd be crazy not to buy another FM and unload an AM.

And even so, CBS would be crazy not to hold onto the blowtorch that is 660, even in an era where the FM band is more visible than AM. I can see CBS unloading one of their three AM's (1010, perhaps) to Cumulus, which will then run the new 24/7 CBS Sports Radio network on it. Since Cumulus would legally own it, CBS would no longer be over the maximum ownership limit. (Obviously, 1010's format would move over to 660, should 1010 be the station that is sold.) But word on the street is that CBS is selling WLNY, a TV station that they just purchased last year, which renders everything I just wrote moot. :p
