WFAS-FM moving to NYC

Z100's COL is still Newark. They did have their studios in Jersey City until several years ago.

WFAS is a different situation though as it involves physically moving their transmitter out of Westchester and into the Bronx. Even though Z100's COL is Newark, they have always been transmitting from Empire.

That's only kind of true. 100.3 WVNJ-FM transmitted from West Orange, NJ (The WFME site) and WHTZ transmitted at least for a week as I remember from the West Orange site. The move to Empire happened in 1983.

103.9 was on the air playing a stream of r&b and gospel but went off. I guess they're testing. I can pick up WVIP from Jersey City better then that station so far, but i hope that was not the final product. That spanish pirate station from union city, nj area needs to switch frequencies. I support pirates as long as they dont interfere with other stations

Maybe they were still broadcasting from the old transmitter. I also get a very strong pirate on 103.9 and I think it's somewhere near Newark/Irvington.

no they weren't. I never picked up wfas that good. they had to be testing. i know alot of pirates broadcast on the same channel. 103.9 is in union city called WOW 103

I check the iHeartRadio and they're still carrying WFAS-FM as an AC format until July 3rd which is tomorrow. I hope I can make a decision to record the final hour of the last night of WFAS-FM, it will be signing off before July 3rd at midnight or after July 3rd at midnight. All of the WFAS-FM people had left the building including Jolana Smith which is either left or not, Ron James has left the station where he did his final show back on Friday after 25 years with the station, and Hartman also did his final show back on Monday and left for good, because Hartman did his afternoon shift for 4 years. I have no word in which Jolana Smith, Hartman or Ron James will be going to next. Maybe they should put Hartman on either WHUD, WCZX's "Mix 97.7" or possibly WSPK's "K104". Ron James will also be going to either one of the HV stations and Jolana Smith will also do mornings on either stations in the Poughkeepsie and Hudson Valley areas in the future.

Were you able to hear WFAS ok over the pirate, or did the pirate cause a lot of interference? I'm located in West Orange and I can pick up WVIP no problem. Right now the Newark pirate is off the air and I'm hearing WOW.

We want all the radio pirates to get off the ground to make way for an urban AC format this coming Friday. A lot of these people who runs every pirate radio station in most of New Jersey, Brooklyn and Queens are pulling the plug and send those pirate radio jocks to jail. Radio pirates are illegal to broadcast on 103.9 since you can't get WFAS-FM up. Like I mentioned many times, these guys who worked on several pirate stations will end up in jail or put into custody. This is going to be in such trouble.

yeah WOW was colliding with each other. when i picked up 103.9 they where playing adult r&b and gospel. it sounded like a urban a/c women station from listening to what artists was playing. the quality sounded like 128kb type of sound. it sounded like it was streaming from a computer.
The reception wasnt as good as WVIP when i picked it up. I think they'll finish everything today before 3p because of the storm

They are testing again this morning. I just heard gospel music booming in for about 5 seconds. FWIW the pirates seem to be off the air (at least the one in Newark).

Do you ever wonder if anyone at these undocumented stations has any idea about stations that are about to move, such as 'FAS, or do they just say WTF, lets find another frequency when it happens? They really ought to assign someone to read these boards so they can advise their listeners where to find them when the inevitable happens.

yep. theyre working on it because now its audio then goes to static. it sounds clear then what i heard yesterday. Thats one thing i like about orange, nj is that theres stations on every frequency haha.
I also noised that WOW 103 is off the air.

Oh ok ok. Wfas is still on the air but 103.9 is testing. I can hear WFAS playing on 103.9 but then 103.9 gets clear all of a sudden and plays r&b.

WFAS (WNBM) was testing again for about 5 minutes with gospel music (poor quality). It came and cut right into the weak WFAS signal in Brooklyn. The signal is pretty good here, with it being a little bit better than what I've listened to on WVIP. It had RDS, but no HD. Right now WFAS is poor with some kind of other signal trying to cut in (WRCN probably with minor tropo). Here is the link to see the testing, but it may still be processing now, http://youtu.be/Dl7kZdPVG0k Enjoy!

Radio 103.9 just BOOMED in for 15 seconds at 2:00 sharp, and now back to WFAS. Very weird.

I wonder what they plan to do between midnight and 1:03pm tomorrow. Will it be dead air or some kind of filler programming?

I'm surprised FAS is not making any mention of the new station.

I guess they are doing tests every hour now. They just did another one at 3pm. The signal seems very clear.
At 4:00, they didn't. Maybe they're done. It sounded like the signal is fine, so they guess everything is up and ready to go.
