WFBQ an ordinary station...

After Bob and Tom end their show, Cheap Channel could be more profitable if they turn off the transmitter. They are pathetic. Really need a good program director , some well selected music and maybe with promotion, that could pull a 4 share.

I think they do a great job of playing the same four Bob Seger songs, the same four AC/DC songs, the same four Eagles songs, the same four Tom Petty songs, the same four ...

Couldn't agree more with orangeradio. Since Bender moved over to Bob & Tom only duties a couple of years ago, one could hear Q95's life and personality being sucked right out of it because of one bad corporate-minded decision after another. So sad. I doubt The Bob & Tom Show will suffer much with Bender exiting, seeing as the two principals (from what I hear) are still actively involved with all aspects of the show. I'm sure Premiere has assets in place to help...hell, they run Rush, Hannity, Beck, Seacrest. Plus, I've been told there are more people on staff (or contributing to) The Bob & Tom Show than are on Q's programming staff!! Wow! Think about that for a moment. Maybe they should run Q?! Hey, maybe there's something to be learned there Cheap Channel! You can't wish a station good...you've got to hire, pay and appreicate good talent...otherwise ya'll just have a 53,000 watt iPod! So much potential though for Q, but the PD seems to be either only doing what he's told, or doesn't know how to create a good radio station...or both. Now, the big question...will Cumulus trip over their own Dickey and miss a chance to put 'FMS and 'JJK #1-#2 25-54? Stay tuned!

Face it, there's only so much you can do with classic rock. That age-group is getting older and older (into their 50s and 60s) and set in their ways. Anyone still getting a kick out of Bob Seger and Skynyrd is a lost cause.

WHAT kind of promotions or zing can they add to a station playing 40-year-old songs to soon-to-be senior citizens? There is just no way to repackage old, stale, dull music.

Classic rock isn't a format that can be added to. All the 'album cuts' in the world won't make it any more interesting, just more of an obscure iPod for old rednecks (just what klu tried and miserably failed at).

I'll tell you how you are wrong just as soon as I chase these kids away... HEY YOU, GET OFF MY LAWN!!!

It takes money to do promotions, or at least people in-house and not 1000 miles away.

I agree big time!
It doesn't always take money to run promotions..... It takes unique solutions created and ran by local/in house staff!!!

Anyway "we" priced ourselves into this spot, victims of own bigger and better ideas.... Remember the days when it was a big deal to give away a pair of tickets to Wrestling at one of the local Armories? Tickets to the drive in, or tickets to some rinky dink tractor pull featuring a cover band afterward? MMMMM, warm beer, cold hot dogs and soggy hamburgers wrapped in paper and aluminum wrappers.

Tough economy means that radio has the opportunity again to reach families through smart entertainment promotions!

There for awhile selling trade at 50% off online was a cute way to shore up the bottom line.... CRACK the coffers open and give it away, tie it back to the shopping cart online. Gain listener loyalty, buzz, fun, and exciting "cheesy" radio again. ((NOVEL CONCEPT - drive customers to our advertisers))

Ahhhhh...Never mind..... What The Hell Am I Thinking?

Bring back M*A*S*H* and Seinfeld and network TV will again relive it's glory years when the entire family would sit in the living room and watch!

SORRY, it isn't going to happen any more than your glory years of radio will return. Too much entertainment out there. Giving away tickets will not make people listen to your station if they don't like your music. It'll just cost into the budget for your board op job.

Radio has been overtaken by other much more exciting entertainment choices and you people living in the 1970's wanting Adam Smasher back need to realize radio has it's role, but will never be what you remember it being because people do not want that. What you remember as the wacky dj would be considered a goofball and a bad joke in today's entertainment expectations.

Totally missed the satire huh ho?

Two things immediately come to mind that I think have hurt WFBQ in the long run:

1) The switch from "The Rock 'N' Roll Station" to Classic Rock. I know the strategy behind purchasing X103 was to give the younger demo a place to hear Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Alice In Chains, etc all day long instead of after 7pm. Once they purchased X103, the amount of new music became less and less. It got to a point where they would add a new Clapton or Robert Plant song, but that was about the extent of it. Q95 managed to stay relevant and hip during the mid-80s during the hair-metal craze when Motley Crue, Ratt and Quiet Riot were selling millions of albums. I see no reason why they couldn't have done the same during the grunge era. I'm not sure when they officially became a "classic rock" station but sometime in the early 90s they decided to no longer pursue younger listeners. By comparison, WRIF in Detroit stayed more of a rock station where you can hear Aerosmith & AC/DC in addition to newer rock from bands like Nickelback and Papa Roach. I wish Q95 had gone down this route as I'd probably still be listening.

2) The failure to capitalize on the growing popularity of "Dog & Chick" in afternoon drive from 1989-1990. I know Bob & Tom wanted Chick for their show and Chick couldn't keep doing both shifts forever. I just think had they allowed Dog & Chick to grow, it could've eventually given the station a great afternoon team that was more personality driven. Once Chick left afternoons, Matis began to rely more and more on the music and less personality.

Both points right on target. Especially #1

No one carries a radio anymore. They carry a Droid and watch things. WFBQ was cool in the last century but as said is just another brick in the wall...
