WFBQ the album station

F

flashback

Guest
i saw a video on you tube that had the soundbites from the very beginning of WFBQ in 1978 i believe it was.when it was the album station .it brought back memories.by then WNAP had lost its progressive edge.

if only it was more of an album station now then a few songs by each artist playlist station.

i remember when WFBQ had a cash song and the winners picked the next cash song in the morning show bob and tom had a winner.the winner picked one ted nugent song .he was told "that is not on our play list" .the winner picked another nugent song and got the same reply after a few attempts with the same result tom grizwald said in a condsending voice, "we`ll pick the cash song."

my question is this .on that special kind of occasion can`t they break the play list rule.instead of making the listiner feel like an idiot.doesn`t public rerlations play a part of it?

Didn't seem to hurt them. The only stations that allowed listeners to pick the songs (that aren't on a regular playlist) are no longer in business. Might be a reason for that.

The whole "request" concept has mostly become a thing of the past. Those who don't hear the song they like on the radio have no need to try requesting it. People can now pull up any song old or new on Youtube or elsewhere online and hear it immediately.

^ i think you missed the point of my post.

if you have a cash song contest where the rules state the winner picks the next cash song ,which apparently wants the winner to feel more involved, even if the winner picks a song that he thinks fits the format but is not on the playlist shouldn`t the station play it for that occasion?

it probally was on an album they had on hand.after all the wimmer didn`t know how things worked.the way the thing was handled was counterproductive to the way the contest worked and the way the winners requests was handled was insulting to the winner.

it could result in terrible public relations.wouldnt good PR make it worth for once breaking the playlist rule?

it`s not like a WFBQ listener would go "hey i don`t recognize that song.i won`t listen to them any more."

Didn't Ted Nugent eat a bat or something? Maybe it was Ozzie Osborne. Jaz McKay (WIOD's) claim to fame was his personal friendship with Ted Nugent. Ted Nugent's claim to fame is being Rick Perry's friend. Forgot where this was going...oh well :-\

When Q went live they were playing things like Fleetwood Mac, The Beatles and other softer artists. A few years later they went to the harder version of their format. They continued playing a fair amount of new music until the 90s when they brought WRZX in the fold to handle the newer & younger music.

That's exactly what happens.

People claim they want variety when they are surveyed. Data on actual listening demonstrate, however, that a station playing too many songs with high Unfavorable and/or high Unfamiliar scores will lose listeners. Play the hits and them often = recipe for radio success.

Tom Robinson made sure everyone knew Q95 "ain't no disco". The man also smoked 'em if he had 'em and advised us all to do the same.

God I hated that station. The jocks sounded like they hadn't washed in weeks. I stuck with Spyder Harrison and Smokey Rivers over at 15LAC in Nashville. More my speed. During the day, 990 WERK and KISS 99. I really don't know why I listened to KISS 99. There was just something about listening to Knock On Wood for 10 minutes that seemed appealing to me. Go figure.

the average radio listeners are apparently lemmings.

pathetic.

I'm with you on this Keith. Q95 made me want to throw up. 13-WIFE was "The Music Station"

And it's not likely that WFBQ listener (who took the time to actually CALL the radio station) would stop listening anymore either. Come on Flashback, you have some good opinions, and you know enough about radio to know it's all about the law of averages. Stray off the path and yes you absolutely do lose listeners.

Odds are, guys like you have a huge VINYL collection and have all that old cool music at hand, but the masses want what they know for that few minutes of alone time they get each day with their favorite station. Hence the repetition that everyone complains about, but subconsciously expects.

Let it go Flashback, let it go! Those days are gone bye bye.

It was so hard to get to FM. I had to tune the radio to a place on the dial, turn the FM converter on, and it was still mono...
