WFGG Fort Gordon

Back in the mid-1980s Fort Gordon had an FM station on 88.3. It replaced the previous base carrier current AM station. Originally a Collins 50 watt unit I think the station only put out 100 watts ERP but had a nice stereo sound, complete with automation. (Like other CONUS military radio stations such as Ft Hood and Ft Irwin, I think WFGG did not have an FCC license but was rather coordinated through IRAC, an interagency frequency coordination commitee. )

Eventually when WAFJ came on the air and WFGG shifted to another frequency... When I visited the base around 2006 the station and building were gone... Does anyone know when WFGG left the air? Any further history about this radio oddity would be welcomed.

There are listings for it in Elving's FM Atlas of that era....

Google Books has some material here:

If you type in "wfgg 1990 soldiers" into Google you will get a nice three-page article from Soldiers Magazine about the station. The original carrier current station was "WFG" featured in PopComm magazine of the era. Even once WFGG came on the air you could still drive around the post and hear a dead carrier on 640 kHz from the old transmitters in the barracks that remained powered up. The military academies also had stations. Naval Academy's finally gave way to local demands - it was co-channel to WTMD Towson on 89.7.
