WFGW Sold...Again

Information released by the FCC indicates that Blue Ridge Broadcasting (Billy Graham Evangelistic Association) has agreed to sell their AM outlet, WFGW in Black Mountain, to the International Baptist Mission.

Evidently the previous agreement to sell it to the Hispanic couple fell through. This is just an application for transfer of ownership, and is pending FCC approval.

Later . . . .

It has been sold to the people who own WKJV in Asheviile for $78k. They also have an application to move the tower to the WKJV site. Assuming they will diplex with it.

78k? Is that missing a digit or something? If not there are mass market cars that cost more than radio stations... that's a sad state of affairs.

Wow - interesting stuff. If WFGW moves to the WKJV site will they have to change COL?

Figure they'll have to change it. Emma in West Asheville is a long way from Black Mountain.

On another note, I'll be able to visit both the first and last stations I worked at in the same location! I started at 1380 WRAQ at that time in high school, and left WFGW/WMIT in 2001!

I visited "1380" for the first time around 1986 - I say "1380" because I'm not sure it was WKJV at the time (maybe it was WTOO), though it was playing Southern Gospel. However, I noticed a piece of history when I saw "WKKE" embedded in some tile in an entryway. I wonder if that is still there?

If the sale to the International Baptist Association is completed and the COL is changed allowing operation from the WKJV location, it will be interesting to see if transmission on 1010 Khz continues at 47KW. If so the diplexing equipment enclosure will be wild with RF. I'm wondering too about the condition of the ground system at the 1380 site. The three self-supporting towers used for 1380's signals must now have some corrosion present as they are from the days of WLOS. Does anyone know if these towers are of totally welded construction? If so, then corrosion might not be a factor.
