WFHN vs. WPRO FM vs. Hot106

Hey, was wondering about a couple of things.
I noticed that WPRO and Hot106 are a duopoly. But I when I checked on Citadel's website, they listed Hot106 as Top40, and WPRO as "Contemporary Hit Radio." I thought Hot106 was Urban? What's the deal?

Also, I noticed that Fun107 (WFHN), actually broadcasts from New Bedford (which I always believed was part of the Providence market), and not Cape Cod. So I was wondering if there is any competition between these three stations or between WPRO and WFHN?

You're right, Hot 106 is Urban.

I think New Bedford is part of the Providence market, but also a smaller market itself. According to Arbitron, it's market #170. WFHN serves, and does very well in the New Bedford market. Pro also covers that area, but focuses more on areas closer to Providence.

Its actucally Market 174 I believe.

Actually, according to Radio & Records, Hot 106 is CHR/Rhythmic (the same format as WJMN/Boston and WZMX/Hartford.) WPRO and WFHN report to the CHR/Pop or Mainstream Hit panel.

New Bedford is it's own market, but is completely embedded within the Providence market as well. WFHN's studios are in Fairhaven and their format targets the New Bedford and Fall River areas. Back in the day all three stations were owned by different companies and competed more directly with eachother. Fun would challenge Pro-FM during the day with a more rhythmic leaning mainstream mix of music while going head to head with Hot 106 at night for the kids. Fun's music mix hasn't changed all that much over the years but since Citadel assumed ownership of the three stations, they work together to serve younger listeners in the region, which has made for very bland, predictable radio, IMHO.

Yeah it is 174. Some Arbitron number displayers (coughallaccesscough) have been slow on updating the market numbers.

170 to 174. Thank you Massachusetts for raising taxes and shipping asses out of the state. LOL

So let me ask this...
What kind of programming cooperation do WFHN and WPRO share? Does FHN have any Voce-Tracks that it shares with PRO FM? Shared playlists?

WPRO-FM and WWKX (Hot 106) have the same program director (Tony Bristol) and work more closely together in the Providence market. WFHN (Fun 107) is programmed separately in Fairhaven. I'm sure that Fun 107, PRO-FM and Hot 106 do coordinate a bit with each other in regard to formatting, but at the same time, Hot 106 and Fun 107 don't have coverage areas that overlap very much, giving Fun 107 room to be more rhythmic. Jocks from these stations, usually the part-timers, may travel from station to station, including Q105 WQGN/Groton, CT, which is a Citadel-owned top 40 as well.

On a side note, why is a 50-something year-old white dude programming a CHR/rhythmic station? Tony Bristol doesn't exactly strike me as 'street'...

I disagree on one point, Jacko. Some of the Hot coverage area overlaps greatly with that of Fun. The stretch of 195 from East Providence to Fall River is both part of the target reach for both stations. While Hot's signal tends to weaken past Fall River, I think that they try to reach Fall River.
