WFIL REWOUND

it would be great if it were a regular deal.....wfil and wibbage hold a special place in rock and roll radio.......while WFIL really knocked off WIBG they were both iconic radio stations....and it makes for great radio on a holiday weekend when callers are tough to get on talkradio....

There are some of us at the station who would love to see a "rewound" type thing done annually. The jingles, airchecks, and so on, exist to produce something like that on either 560 or 990. But, I doubt we'll ever see it, especially on WFIL where it would be too "out of character" with the religious format. 990, on the other hand, might prove easier since it is already secular conservative talk -- the same format as WABC. It would be wonderful to even bring back some old jocks to host it, or perhaps even do a weekly Saturday night "recreation" like WABC. Perhaps a combined WFIL/WIBG rewound could even be produced and run on WNTP?FYI...just for the record....my comments are my own and don't reflect the opinions of WFIL-WNTP. So don't read into what I am saying!!! This is not a hint at things to come, just an agreement that some of us here would also like to see a rewound special.

The sad thing is it would take a sale of WFIL for this to happen, if at all.Salem will not produce a "WFIL Rewound" as it would be a radical departure from their Christian Talk format. The only chance would be if WOGL brings back the "Legends of Philly Radio" weekend. It doesn't seem CBS likes to dwell in the past and, as such, those weekends have all but disappeared. Unless a suburban signal does it (I know, which one?), the days of reminiscing about WFIL, WIBG and, to an extent, WIP are over. Again, it is truly sad....

I'm afraid the WABC situation is unique. While I have so many fond memories of WABC, WFIL and WIBG, I see a difference in their histories once the slide started. When Famous 56 died, it DIED. It even became WEAZ-AM for a term, before Salem bought the WFIL call. WIBG became WZZD and died a horrible death before taking the current call letters. The call letter changes are significant when doing a rewound show.Besides a brief fling with disco, WABC seg'd successfully into AC before making the big switch to News Talk. And it was not a sudden move. Announced ahead of time, they let Big Dan and Ron Lundy do a final tribute show and launched the new format with an hour long tribute to Music Radio 77 as their first talk show. WNEW-FM did a long form tribute to the former Top 40 powerhouse, since many WABC listeners had long before switched to 'NEW-FM, which in 1965 got WABC dj Scott Muni.WABC did everything possible to lure their Top 40 listeners to their new format. And as the format developed, it worked. From being the most listened to Top 40 station in the USA, they have become the most listened to News Talk station in the country. While WFIL and 990 drifted into a nitch positions, WABC remains a powerhouse. Many of the Top 40 listeners are still loyal listeners. People all over the country have WABC memories and during the winter many of them, including me, were again listening Saturday nights to Mark Simone.Doing a rewound day for a station/stations that have not had broad appeal for over 20 years is far more difficult, if not impossible, to pull off than on a station that continues to be a major power in their market. I loved the reunion weekends on WOGL, but a rewound presentation would be far more difficult to produce. And obtaining an audience on the actual stations, which now have low numbers, might make it unworth the significant work involved. Johnny Donovan works all year to produce the Memorial Day 12 hours of shows. Who would be able to pull that off in Philly, even if enough tapes still exist.Frankly, I suggest that we a form of rewound available on the great Hy Lit web stream and we owe Hy and his staff a vote of thanks for putting that on our pc's!

Folks, I have hoped for a WFIL Rewound show for a few years now. I have e-mailed WFIL several times over the past few years about this very thing. Unfortunately, I don't think it will ever happen. Keep in mind, you can always visit my web site http://www.famous56.com and listen, and remember the "Good Old Days."
