WFIV relaunches as "i 105"

Not sure if anyone else caught it or not, but Horne Radio's AAA formatted WFIV relaunched today and adopted the new name "i 105, Knoxville's Independant Radio". The AAA format remains the same, but they switched slogans from "105-3 WFIV, Quality Rock, Real Variety" to the new one. Also they seem to be billing themselves more as a Knoxville station now, with less emphasis on Farragut. Also there is a new website up at www.myi105.com.

I've been a WFIV listener for quite some time now and have been curious as to what the change would be since they started teasing this last week on the air. Glad to see they kept the format. I have noticed that they have tightened up the playlist since the name change. Don't know yet if that's a good thing or a bad thing. Also, WFIV has not has an "emphasis on Farragut" for quite awhile. I think the only place Farragut was mentioned lately was the old logo on the website.

This "move" is curious to me. That signal has had more changes than Lady Gaga at an awards ceremony.

Even though they've changed their calls and personality, WFIV has played AAA for about 7 years. I'm glad we have them in town. Now, they just need to work on improving their signal into Knoxville

Now that we have an "I-105" I wonder if this dashes the hopes of those here that want an "I-100" revival? There would surely never two "I"s in the same market.

I wouldn't bet against that happening. You've got one station, "i-105" that isn't really a player in the market and who changes formats and monikers with the drop of a hat, and a 100,000 watt giant who is still remembered by many as "i-100" that can cover not only the metro but the several other markets as well.

Horne needs to understand the reality of his situation. He's pumping money in to a failing cluster and he's never going to get it back. Time to cut his loses and move on or be honest and serve the Loudon County market and possibly break even.

Changes formats at the drop of a hat? They have been AAA for 7 years now. I certainly hope they are here to stay since they are my favorite station in the market right now. Yeah I see your point about how an "I-100" would trump "I-105" but that scenerio would only work in a PPM environment. With the diary system, the two stations would probably have to share the diary mentions.

Of course this is all fantasy talk anyway since WNOX isn't going anywhere.

I don't know where all the "seven years" talk comes from in regards to their format. They launched with a harder alternative "Jack" styled format in November of 2005 and have slowly evolved into the hybrid AAA format they have now. Regardless of whether or not it's the same format, that's still 4 and a half years in actual time.

They've had at least seven formats and another six or seven sub-genres of those formats in the past decade and a half. That's pretty much a record for an FM station in this market.

If "I-100" were to come back, and it is a long shot, but not outside the realm of possibilities as Citadel is only operating 100.3 under an LMA, and are in bankruptcy, it would trounce the Horne station in the first book and force them to either rethink their positioning or go with a wholesale format change.

Could be. I moved here in '07 so I'm just going by what WFIV is saying.

100.3 will once again be a music format again some day, most likely CHR,, but it cant be I-100 monicker unless the WOKI calls are moved back... FM 100--Hits 100,, or maybe X-100,,,,No never mind,, scratch the last one,, forgot 94-X

What about Mega Hits 100.3 as a possible CHR moniker?

That sounds a little retro. Well now that the '90s format (or the "Gen X" format) is starting to catch on, there does seem to be a hole for that here. Or does Jack-FM cover this territory?
