WFIZ-FM, Conneaut, Ohio

What happened to this station?

It was at 105.1 in the early 70's, but I see nothing about it in any listings.

Did it move to another frequency...or did it just disappear?

I did some research from an old White's Radio Log and found a listing for WGOJ, 105.5, Conneaut.

Today, it has the same calls and is owned/carries Bible Broadcasting Net.

Thanks pwayne 1

BTW, I've never heard of White's Radio Log. What is that?

I've also never heard of Bible Broadcasting Net. Is that similar to the Salem group of religious stations?

You're correct that WFIZ was at 105.5, not 105.1. Also, WWOW is 1360, not 1350. Both were launched and owned by Lou Skelly through the 60's and early 70's, and for the most of those years, WFIZ simucast WWOW's top 40 format, with the FM staying on at night after the FM shut off. The FM antenna was side mounted on an old flagpole behind the downtown building where the studios were located. A lot of well-known jocks got there starts there, including Gary Stevens (later WMCA NY, then President of Doubleday), Barney Pip ('CFL Chicago), Bob Payton (X-ROK 80 in Mexico), Scott Howitt (longtime Cleveland personality), and Ernie Anderson (Ghoulardi, and later the ABC voice). The one constant through it all was Ken Vaughn, who did news through a multitude of formats and owners until well into the 90's.

Thanks Analog 420. That's some great info.

Do you know when Gary Stevens and Ernie Anderson worked there?

Also, where is Ken Vaughn today? Is he still in radio, or, for that matter, in Conneaut?

Gary Stevens was one of the initial staff when the station signed on in the fall of 1959. Not certain when Ernie Anderson was there....but it would have had to been the very early '60s prior to his being in Cleveland.

After Ken Vaughn left WWOW he was anchoring a local cable television newscast in Conneaut, but not certain of where he is now.

No....I assumed there would only be one cable company there. However, it's possible that the newscast was produced by the City of Conneaut for cable carriage, since I remember hearing that the studio and news set were in Conneaut city hall.
