WFLA covered Rays' game instead of the convention

During my drive home last night, at 6:30 pm, WFLA switched from Hannity and convention coverage to the Rays' game. With all of the other stations we have dedicated to just sports, I would have liked for WFLA to keep the convention coverage going. I mean, this type of event doesn't happen here in Tampa very often ... anyone else feel that way? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

Lets see... 820 was covering the convention, 860 was covering the convention, WUSF was covering the convention, TV was covering the convention... I'm not sure who all I'm leaving out, but pretty much every newstalk station was covering the convention, or at the very least talking about it... and lets remember that before the baseball game, 970 was talking about the convention all day/week/month long. Realistically, not that many people care anymore. Americans are very disenchanted with the phony political system that we have, and want to escape from it. Beyond reporting on the ridiculous police presence in the bay area, I'm not sure what news there really is to report from the convention... It's not like they're over there curing cancer. I don't like baseball, but at this point I'd rather listen to a Rays game. Quite frankly, I can't wait until all the politicians and talking heads go home.

All has to do with ad revenue. Even though live coverage of a news event is important and noteworthy, it's not going to move a lot of product. Sports on the radio does because advertisers are in place and there are set breaks during the game/broadcast to accommodate them. The most important thing to remember in all of this is that radio is REVENUE driven, NOT content.

I would probably feel the way you do a few years ago, but going to CSB opened my eyes.

It has nothing to do with revenue, content, or listener interest. It has everything to do with contracts, as in when the Buccaneers play on WDAE, the Rays get moved to WFLA. No conspiracy theories, just legal stuff all parties signed a long time ago.
