WFLI

"Jet FLI, W-F-L-I, and now, on we go with the musical show on 'Downbeat, beat, beat, beat'"
 
WFLI signed on in Feb. 1961, and had an immediate impact on the Chattanooga market. Dominated throughout the 60's with top 40, then faced tougher competition in the 70's from WGOW and WDXB, but hung in there, through some ups and downs, and remained top 40 until the late 70's, when WSKZ (KZ-106) debuted on FM. WFLI went country for a few years, and has been gospel since the 80's.
 
absolutely my best radio memories are of jet-fli. as a teen in the 70's, this was the station in southeast tenn. it was wfli by day, wls at night. in my minds eye wfli was always just so big, at 50,000 watts they had the signal. was lucky enough in the early 80's to get to tour thier studio and see the monsterous x-mitter. even though they had gone gospel by then, the place was full of top-40 memories. still had a cart with the jet-sweep there. like many others it was a cool station, sad that today's radio can't compare to the days of the big top-40 am's.
 
I use to listen to Jet Fly radio in Chatt, in the early 60's using a Knight Kit R55 ham receiver and a 40M dipole novice antenna in west Knoxville. They had a great rock station at that time.
