How can a station call themselves local when they cut back the local programming to 1 hour per day? Jack Welch is gone and they hire no one to take his place???? Must be a tightwad of an owner who doesn't want to pay anybody to come in and run the joint.

With the down economy we are now experiencing, it is more economically feasible to use bartered network syndicated programming than it is to hire local staff and incur salary payout as a cost of doing business. Once the economic conditions become more favorable for a station owner to take on more debt with the high potential of realizing a reasonable return on investment, we may see local programming make a "come-back" to local radio.

That's right, we'll connect with our communities when we can afford it. Meantime, the three or four people in Arcadia who still listen to their local AM radio station have exactly one reason to keep listening: Rush. Sooner or later, that reason will go away...

To be fair to the other side, however, what exactly is there to talk about in Arcadia? It's not like the signal has a presence in more populated towns such as North Port and Venice, which seem to be almost "white areas" for the Limbaugh show. (Weak signal from Tampa, weak signal from Port Charlotte, weak signal from Arcadia.)

So if no one is listening, why hire someone who will have no audience? Pointless.

Besides....you can't prove that no one is listening. There are no ratings for Arcadia.

Wrong! If you don't intend to fill a position, you don't have to post an opening.

It's called doing what it takes within the legal boundaries of the Commission rules and regulations to keep the station on the air as opposed to going dark. The latter is inconsistent in serving the public interest; Hence, the station is serving the local public interest on a limited basis simply by being on the air. If any of the readers of this thread have actually owned, operated and / or managed a radio station of any size, then it is common knowledge among those who have served in that capacity that it is an expensive undertaking to keep the proverbial doors open on any station, especially small market radio! In our current state of the economy, that is a challenging objective to meet on a consistent basis.

Actually it isn't entirely "wrong". The FCC has very strict rules governing equal opportunity employement initiatives. If there are no openings, a good showing must still be shown on the annual EEO report that the station is following EEO rules snd regulations, mainly to show the station is not discriminating in its employment recruitiing and selection practices.

But you still can't prove that the reason comes down to no one is listening. If you make that statement, you need to be able to back it up.
