WFLO-AM will shut down on December 31st

Goodbye to a legendary station.

FARMVILLE, Va. (WRIC) — WFLO, a legendary radio station in the Town of Farmville since 1947, is leaving the airwaves come the new year.

For nearly 75 years, WFLO has not only brought in listeners from Farmville — but from several counties all over the area.

With the recession in 2008 and changes to the national economy, management at the station said the pandemic was the final blow to force them to sign off.

So a couple points on this issue:

The sale did not include the studios. They subdivided the land and sold EMF about half of it. When I was there last, the only thing at the tower was the FM transmitter (directly fed from the studios) in an incredibly small shed. 1940’s vintage AM transmitter was located in the studio building.

Consummation has already been delayed as a tower inspection showed some issues that needed to be addressed. Colonial Broadcasting apparently addressed those. In addition, assuming EMF even bothers to do anything with 870 (daytime only), it will need to have the transmitter physically moved several hundred feet at a minimum. The FM had some bizarre harmonics all over the band that probably need to be addressed as well.

My guess is someone assumed this would be a “turnkey” transaction. EMF will have to do a bit more than a lot of their buys to bring it up to something acceptable

Noticed today that EMF is selling WFLO AM to Heart of Virginia communications which plans a variety format with local programming beginning Dec. 1.
