WFMX

Wednesday, Paul Jr., who writes the stories, told us how an American chef developed chop suey from leftovers. His first attempt to do something creative was to scrape the food off unwashed plates! :p Later, he just used a combination of leftover food.

I am sorry to hear of the demise of "the old girl" as the chief engineer used to refer to her. I had a lot of good years at that station but was only a blip on the radar. FMX was truly an institution. I am glad I got out before the greedheads sucked the last dollar out of her. RIP.

I also hated what they did to WFMX: CC took what was a heritage country station with a strong signal, completely and thoroughly butchered her, moved the whole shebang to Greensboro--- well, Clemmons--- with a much weaker signal--- and the new format doesn't even fit the new name! They did somewhat better in Raleigh; the new "Kiss" here (formerly WRSN Sunny 93.9) sounds more like "Kiss" (although it is the only "Kiss" station carrying the rhythmic AC format) than what WFMX flipped to. On the other hand, these are the same knuckleheads who took a heritage classic-rock station (106.1 WRDU), ran her into the ground, then switched to country under the name "Rooster" (probably because the name "Bull," which would have been more accurate--- they pulled this same stunt two years ago on the former WTRG Oldies 100.7--- was already taken by another station).

For now counts! What have you done for me lately? WFMX will never return. Sad, but a fact of life that we must all accept!

The biggest problem for FMX was the attempt to be competitive in Charlotte and Greensboro. It could not do well in either. If it was mine, I would have traded out a car, some groceries, and super served Statesville and Hickory!

Geez, I didn't say to bring back WFMX. I just don't think that format was the right move. And you might want to ask people that worked there if they served Statesville and Hickory. I believe the answer is yes. Don't blame the staff, wait, I take that back... blame the staff they had a good station and can't help that people listened to it from Greensboro. They couldn't help that listeners were leaving WTQR to come and listen to them.

IMHO WMKS is a DISASTER! Will rank up there with one of the biggest bonehead moves of all time. :p

Was a boneheaded move by CC, but that's one of many. Flip a heritage rock station (WRDU) to country. That's boneheaded.

I agree 100%! CC literally murdered WRDU, a station that was once an icon in North Carolina. Victim of poor management and lack of imagination. There's a lot to be said for heritage and history. I once worked for a market-leading station that was nearly dead (twice), but resurrected by a talented Program Director both times. That station is still a market-leader today, with a 20+ year heritage. It gives the salespeople a lot to talk about. Would you rather buy the "blue chip" stock with the steady performance, or risk your advertising dollars on the "newest thing"?

And speaking of CC. In my opinion that company stiffles creativity and imagination. When I worked for them, if something worked in a particular market, that manager took all the kudos, and then the "idea" was sent to ALL of the other markets and positioned as something great that they should do, as well. I got the impression that many of the spineless market managers would do whatever the "idea" was, just to garner favor from the higher-ups and prove that they've drunk the koolaide. What these market managers didn't take into account was, duh... "Will this work in my market, with my people, with our clients?" Personally, I think that's what happened to RDU. Once Phil Zachary was out of the picture, those stations fell apart from the management they had. They dropped the sales commissions, so their top, talented, salespeople left, then they mandated some really stupid changes having to do with combo selling, etc. It just began to spiral downward and have yet to recover. The addition of Dick Harlow to manage the Raleigh and Greensboro markets might help, but he's going to be spread pretty thin.

Where is Keith Todd

WFMX Calls Have Been Snatched Up

According to a some internet searches and the FCC database, a station in Skowhegan, Maine has snatched the WFMX calls: http://www.mixmaine.com/

Sadly, I was holding out hope that another area station would attempt to replicate the WFMX sound by grabbing the calls and attempting to let the heritage live on.
