WFNI and Mark Boyle

Mark Boyle and Dan Dackich (former IU basketball coach) were filling in for Kravitz and Eddie this afternoon on WFNI. I'm not a frequent listener to WFNI, but Boyle was considerably more engaging than Kravitz.

Just as predicted on this board nearly a year ago :D

I agree.

The problem with the regular show is Eddie White (mr. no experience necessary). He controls all the conversations, and most of the time it's with some unrelated, uninteresting and unfunny comments.

Have heard Dakich and Boyle on several times together in the last couple of weeks. Any thoughts this duo might takeover another time slot in the daytime programming?

I keep hearing - "Wait...Kravitz and Eddie will get on a roll soon and take their rightful place at No. 1 in the sports drive-time competition."

Been hearing that since Jan. 8.

Seems the only person over there at Emmis who doesn't understand that trying to create a radio star out of the average dolt on the street never works is John Quick-the guy who continues to run (oh did I say run, I meant RUIN) what could be a very good station. He did the same thing in Minneapolis, and it had the same marginal results.
Let's run down the list: Jersey Johnny, Eddie White, Bob Kravitz, Jeff Smulyan's wife (Sorry. I couldn't bring myself to listen to that train wreck of a "dating" show she did with Ed Wenck just to find out what her name was), the list goes on. If I'm Kravitz or White, I never take a day off...ever, I wouldn't want anyone to hear a real radio guy (like Mark Boyle) fill in and make everyone realize just how bad I am. I haven't heard much of Dan Dakich's work on the radio, so I can't comment on that, but having listened to Mark Boyle for many years both in his play by play role and as a sports talk show host on WNDE, I would honestly say he's one of the most entertaining show hosts in the market. Since he rarely is on the air anymore outside of the Pacers broadcasts, I'd say he's probably doing pretty well without having to do a daily radio show just for the money, which is too bad for WIBC, WFNI, and their listeners. But hey, they still have the hardware store guy who can fill in on morning drive when neccessary-and sadly he's probably their best on air personality.

I have heard enough to say that, for a neophyte, Dakich is doing pretty well -- far better than Eddie White, who has been hacking away at it for eight months longer.

Dakich makes a nice ex-jock/coach second banana. He is articulate, credible and has enough of a "regular guy" personality to be engaging. He's not hilarious nor does he possess genius insight, but he's not aiming for either one. Take the good parts of your favorite high school coach from a small market, add the Division I experience and you get Dakich. A nice find for WFNI.

However, he's not to be left alone on the air. Dakcih clearly needs a "driver" -- whether it's a superlative one like Boyle or just a garden-variety talent -- to handle all the radio "stuff" like getting in and out of breaks, shifting topics, teeing up callers or handling live-copy sponsorships. Perhaps Dakich could learn that stuff along the way but, for now, he needs an "A" host so he can be the "B" cohost.

Bottom line: I hate Bob Knight and Notre Dame equally, but I'd much rather hear Dakich worshipping the Genital... er... General than White spew on-and-on about the Drunken Irish and who he knows in The Region.

I listened again today with Eddie and someone from WTHR, surname "Wollford". I think the problem is Kravitz.

Boyle did a nice job when he did the afternoon show on WNDE many, many, many moons ago (after Mark Patrick left the show the first time for WISH). The show could get a bit off-topic -- an early version of today's lifestyle/sports/casual chat shows -- but he was pretty engaging and easy to listen to.

Kravitz's problem is that neither he nor Eddie White are really radio people. Put a professional host (like Boyle) in the chair with one of them, and the show will end up being pretty good. Right now, it's just two guys who know something about sports bantering back and forth, and it's not always engaging.

Is Jersey Johnny gone?
Or just his weekday show?
Did I miss something along the line?
Just what the world needs...a Kravitz & Eddie replay...

I saw a billboard for WFNI today featuring HUGE picd of Kravitz and Eddie. I nearly drove off the road. UGH! Like that will help.
