Good point.. Forgot about B101 running IBOC.. Wow, if Cool 102 starts running HD, FNX will be really crunched south of the city..

Ugh. That'll probably be the end of my listening to "Little Walter's Time Machine" and "The Doo-Wop Stop with Bobby B" on WWBB Providence weekends here in Somerville.
It was already enough of challenge nulling WFNX out from the Medford/Malden line site, and I'm on the side of a south facing hill that's blocked to the north toward Medford. I think the vista from here southeastward toward the Financial District is pretty open though, so that'll be it for B-101.

It was already enough of challenge nulling WFNX out from the Medford/Malden line site, and I'm on the side of a south facing hill that's blocked to the north toward Medford. I think the vista from here southeastward toward the Financial District is pretty open though, so that'll be it for B-101.

Two, three, or four years ago, a move of WFNX-101.7's transmitter to Boston would have been a major boost to their alternative-rock format, as their signal would have been much-improved.
But now, with a combination of both WFNX's declining ratings and the national decline in rock radio ratings, I don't think it would help.
WFNX should seriously look at a format change. And they should flip to some kind of music-intensive Spanish-language format, given the huge hole created when WAMG-890 (and simulcast partner WLLH-1400) flipped to ESPN Radio.
But as has been pointed out by yours truly and many other visitors to this board, WFNX owner Steve Mindich is unlikely to change WFNX's format, even though with 'FNX's ratings having plunged, I personally think the station has started to lose money.
But now, with a combination of both WFNX's declining ratings and the national decline in rock radio ratings, I don't think it would help.

But there's no way that you can know that for sure, and there's certainly no way that you can know that his radio station and his newspaper, which he may be regarding as a combined property since one promotes the other, is losing money.
Though there are some small competitors, The Phoenix practically has a lock on the weekly "alternative" entertainment paper market in Boston, and it contains quite a bit of major market advertising (not to mention the dating service, etc..).

As of right now I can get WWBB on a good car radio here on the North Shore.
Don't know if that'll change. 100000kw.com says WFNX is currently 449ft 2kw
and the CP, now approved I guess, is 627ft 2kw. Is their current ERP
6,000 watts (was 3,000 watts years ago, or am I thinking of WBOQ?) and what will their ERP be now?<P ID="signature">______________

Good thing they spun off the Westerly freq to WEEI. Last time I checked
WEEI-FM was doing better in the Prov. ratings than one or both of the
Prov. based sports talkers! Or at least it was close.

I think their transmitter output will stay about the same, but the additional height will increase their coverage area for the same amount of power.

I suspect the Phoenix paper is profitable, but WFNX-101.7 may be losing money.
The profits from the paper may be helping to cover any losses WFNX might have.

Which does quite well even up here on the North Shore. Not much power but it gets out.
