WFNX being sold to Clear Channel

raccoonradio said:
Would guess CC would announce the new format only when FCC approval comes and maybe there would be a week or so for a last gasp of FNX before new format (emanating from Medford or
wherever) would start... a shut off from the Lynn studios, a power up from the new studios etc

I’m surprised CC doesn’t immediately take it over with an LMA until the FCC clears the sale.

My lord, talk about a station on LIFE SUPPORT...

They have taken this once great station and GUTTED IT from the inside out... very sad.

It's only a matter of time now. Time to pull the plug.

The station literally is on life support at the moment, and the issues that you detailed shouldn't be seen as indicators how FNX behaved pre-purchase. When the Clear Channel purchase was announced, most of the station's staff was instantly let go, and only 3 full-timers and 1 part-timer remain behind to keep things going at a station that, even in its bare-bones pre-sale state, had more than 20 people running it. There are not a lot of people able to fix all of the problems that are happening, and I'm sure the guys who are trying to keep the format on for the next 60-90 days have their hands full simply trying to keep the station on the air without much help.

GenX Radio.

That demographic will be the next to be sacrificed to the sell-Chinese-produced-crap-to-the-young-and-stupid-obsessed Madison Avenue gods. The high end of GenX is already in its 50s. I can't imagine that CC is interested in expanding the format to more stations.

I'm not sure exactly when the tail end of the baby boomer generation took place--'60? '64? I was
born in '62 and get the feeling I'm a baby boomer.

The various glitches mentioned (dead station walking...) almost sound like some of the
things at WXKS 1200--old newscasts re-airing, dead air, etc. Lack of attention, but:
>>most of the station's staff was instantly let go

Will 1200 be here after the election? I'd think so. It may even be on FM, which is one possibility
mentioned for 101.7. When it went on air in March of 2010 I believe I noted that prog talk
lasted 2 yrs and 2 months (10/04- 12/06) and thus if "Rush Radio", now "Talk 1200" lasted past
May of 2012, they'd be around longer than "Boston's Progressive Talk". I'm pretty sure it'll
last past Nov. and beyond. They want a home for their shows like Rush, Beck, Hannity.
And they're doing a couple local shows, too. That home may even extend to the FM dial.
Clears ads, makes some money.

Let's all remember that Howie's contract is up soon as well... put it on FM with Howie in the morning and Severin in the afternoons.

I think you are much more likely to see that happening than the Red Sox playing in the World Series this fall.

Or the other way around and Howie can keep his regional syndication going....

It seems sort of silly, to me, to compare the current Talk 1200 effort with "Boston's Progressive Talk, AM 1200/1430". Progressive Talk was an election-year effort to draw at least some attention (and $) to two poor AM sticks. 1430 was going for listeners advertisers didn't want, while 1200 was a real oddball in the Clear Channel portfolio, airing brokered Brazilian religious programming while it awaited the move to Newton. Heck, 1200 wasn't even being run out of the Clear Channel Boston facility until the Progressive Talk format started.

With Talk 1200, Clear Channel is actually investing in the programming - getting Rush from WRKO, and adding several dayparts of local programming - far beyond the one weekend show that AM 1200/1430 had (by comparison, even Radio Disney has a local weekend public affairs show). With the signal limitations of 101.7 FM, I'm not sure that the coverage really aligns with the listeners that Talk 1200 serves, but it would hardly be a surprise if we're hearing that programming on FM in a few months.

(In full disclosure, I did win a Bush-isms day-to-day desk calendar from AM 1200/1430. ;))

Well I meant they could do conserv. talk for at least as long as they tried prog talk...and as of
this month, they have (2 yrs and 2 months) and it should continue past the elections. The rumors of conservative talk going on the improved signal of 1200 lasted awhile, and did come true. Yes, ratings not stellar and one can blame everything from talent to
signal to the PPM method, and if (supposedly not likely; those in the know are predicting Spanish) they simulcast or move it to 101.7
it may not be all that much better. But they want to clear ads and shows.

>>actually investing in the programming

Indeed, not just getting Rush etc but having local daily shows, which they didn't do as prog talk.
(Some wondered if they were putting prog talk on to scuttle accusations of bias, as
there was an effort to bring back the Fairness Doctrine. Look, we're trying, we're running
progressive talk here!)

Howie has said on air he'd keep his syndie deal--he has relationships with the owners
of WGAN, WVMT, WXTK, WHYN, WNTK etc. and I'm sure they'd want to keep him on

EXACTLY. That's what I was driving at.

But I would much rather them go silent until the format change, then to carry on like they are now.

WFNX was better than this.

Perhaps it's a poor imitation of what was but they're at least staying on to give their listeners a few weeks or a month of two of WFNX before it goes away. Occasional live DJs (I think Julie Kramer
will be back for another shift?) As far as I know, Mindich and Boston Phoenix Media is still the
owner, subject to FCC approval of the transfer. The listeners are already upset that they're going off air. Imagine if they tuned in now to hear not "dead air" (as in, an open carrier) but OFF air
(sssssssssssssss... hey 101.5 and 101.9 are suddenly coming in near it though...) Nope, I think
once a time for shut off is announced, you'll find a last song, etc. then switch off from Lynn studios
and power on from Medford or wherever. Maybe a short period of off air if there's a glitch.

btw not that Wikipedia should always be considered the gospel truth, someone changed the entries for WFNX and WKOX to read that 101.7 will become WKOX-FM with a Spanish format in the Summer of 2012. They well may but as far as I know there has been no official announcement from
Clear Channel. They are no doubt waiting for the sale to be approved, etc. Nothing (...yet) from
Clear Channel, or in the Globe, Herald, etc. It could well be Spanish. It could be conservative
talk, country, 90s rock, Hawaiian, ESPN Deportes, classical...but there has been no official announcement. I revised them to say that "no new format has been announced" (for 101.7). If someone wants to go on and say they will become Spanish then whatever but this is speculation,
not fact. It would be like someone saying on Wikipedia that Romney will be the 45th President of the U.S. It could happen, but the election is half a year away. Speculation is not fact. As they
used to say on Monty Python, "...Wait for it!..."

And they were running ads; another good reason to stay on, as they sold the time and have to make good! Plus as they have said they plan to celebrate the station over the next couple
months when CC takes over. As for Wiki., I would hope people would post actual info and
not speculation about format and/or calls. When we know the new format and calls, the
info will get out there, but Wiki. is a source for info--not rumors.

If it were Spanish it would probably be music or talk, or possibly sports (ESPN Deportes). I would
be all for talk 101.7/1200 myself but it has been explained that WFNX's signal is better in Boston itself than in the suburbs. Suburbs, good signal--good for conservative talk, country, etc.
Good signal in city? Spanish, rap/R&B (but it would cannibalize WJMN or WXKS)

Then again CC has been known to stick their talkers/sports signals on FM given the preference
for FM these days. Or they want to address a format hole, perhaps (Spanish...though if you're
in Mer. Valley or North Shore you might get some on 102.9 from Lawrence.).

1200: Better signal now, and local hosts for WXKS (AM) --getting some ratings, bringing in some money.
Putting it on FM would possibly increase that; but again it's been said it doesn't reach
the suburbs well (popular for conserv. talk, though certainly some in the city would like it).
This is why some are speculating Spanish...and some, a simulcast of 1200.
