WFNX being sold to Clear Channel

Mindich's company can now concentrate on its core business -- publishing a newsletter for the adult entertainment and sex industries.

This is really sad - WFNX was one of the last remaining commercial alternative stations not owned by one of the giants. And they were one of the few still dedicated to the purity of the format and breaking new music, while remaining more accessible to a larger audience than a college radio station (and not just because of their dial position or signal). I'll miss them a lot.

Though admittedly, Clear Channel's Radio 104.5 in Philadelphia is pretty damn good for a big corporate station (and more truly alternative than Radio 92.9). They play a good amount of new music, and can occasionally surprise me with an older "oh wow" song. The only real drawback is their occasional tendency to play heavily Hot AC/AAA-leaning artists like The Fray, but again, they're not as bad in that area as Radio 92.9, and I'd rather hear those artists over a lot of the more Active Rock-leaning bands.

So if WFNX sounded that way, it wouldn't be the worst thing ever, though I would still prefer WFNX's current sound. But I'm get the impression that they'll probably flip formats altogether.

Very sad news indeed..hopefully WEQX hangs on, they will be last true alternative. 92.5 the river will be all that's left in Boston..for as long as they last..

other stations (yes CC does own WGIR-FM and WWBB-FM) matter (WBUR somehow does!) in possible tower moves.

WBUR matters because of required distance to stations 10.6 or 10.8 MHz removed from the station's frequency (the most common IF in FM radios is 10.7 MHz).

101.7 - 10.8 = 90.9

I don't understand why everyone wants to turn every station into a spanish language station when it's sold or a format change is whispered about.
I understand hispanics are a growing population but instead of going in a direction like that why not keep a station like FNX in the format it's in and perhaps tweak it a bit?
I worked there when they went toe to toe with AAF & BCN for more of a male geared audience and they did GREAT both ratings & revenue wise and would have continued doing well if they hadn't pushed Mittman out and cheaped out on paying Storm & Birdsey who at the time had a strangehold on afternoon drive for their demo - if you wanted to listen to music otherwise if you were a guy you were most likely listening to EEI.
I cringe for what CC is going to do to FNX, voice trackers from out of town doing generic breaks for their "alternative format", nothing locally geared at all not even the top of the hour ID's

I hope they can make a good station out of this. Anything But Rock, or Talk. There are way too many Rock and Roll Stations, and way too many Talk stations that mostly say bad things about (every) President. There are many other Topics, talk about something good, such as Education, Travel, Entertainment, Comedians...
I hope they can make a good station, like some of you thought? Country (There's a lot of great Country music, and Country music radio shows out there that can battle against 102.5) or , Spanish AC (Mia 1430 on 101.7 would be great), or an Urban AC station.
Something different has to be done here

People don't think talk (in Eng.) could be the format but who knows?
One possibility:
1200 Talk and/or music in Spanish
101.7 Katz, Beck, Rush, Jay et al

Again, not totally likely but picture the WXKS site...only it says Talk 101.7...
(And for LauroJRM, it wouldn't be an additional talk station, it would be the same but in
a new location. As for Spanish lang. poss. on the AM, or FM, who knows.)

>>There are way too many Rock and Roll Station

Good news for you! There will now be one fewer. The same thing happened in other
places like the Lake Champlain area of VT where WIER changed from active rock to AC
(as a competitor, WEZF changed from AC to hot AC). Active/alt-rockers being ditched.

Wouldn't the biggest winner be WERS?

Their weekday programming is kind of a triple-A/alt mix, yes?

Plus they pull some pretty good numbers for a non-comm with a signal almost identical to WFNX (both stations broadcast from the same location).

Alternative, as stated, won't stay because Phoenix Media is retaining the intellectual material and call letters.

You're going to see FM talk. There's a lot of money invested in programming with no traction on 1200. FM talk creates a more balanced cluster for CC Boston.

You could see an upgrade of the signal and another talk station with Howie as the cornerstone. You could also see a Spanish CHR type station. It is very much needed.

To do what with? Set up a jockless webstream run out of a broom closet playing WFNX's music library on autopilot shuffle play?
