WFNX being sold to Clear Channel

Maybe there will be an extended stunt on 101.7 FM (perhaps even a couple of weeks).

One possibility I could see is a short-term (read: several weeks) simulcast of one of Clear Channel's other area FM stations (i.e. WXKS-107.9 or WJMN-94.5) until the new format is ready.

Or maybe a simulcast of Kiss or Jammin' until November 1st, then all-Christmas, with the "real" format of 101.7 to be unveiled after the Holidays.

If its a simulcast with 1200, 101.7 can't be "WXKS-FM". But 1200, too, could be
"WHBA"

H = Hot ?
B = Boston ?
A = Air(waves) ?

Hot? Harbor? Bay? This is getting weird :)

Hot would imply Jammin is moving from 94.5 to 101.7, with something else going on 94.5 :p Harbor or Bay would fit for a soft AC or adult hits...

As much as I would like to see soft AC or adult hits, this format is dying.

Look at the "Formats" boards for Easy Listening Soft AC. We couldn't even keep "The Cove" on 103.3 HD2.

Now that 101.9 is "New Rock 101.9" in NYC after the demise of "FM News", I think it's time for the former FNX jocks to start sending demos to Merlin and stop farting around on the internet.

I listened today on my way back to NJ from Boston, and it's very similar to FNX, just maybe a little more rock edge than FNX. But the currents are the same, and musically it has the right vibe.

I'd love to see Adam 12 or some of the others wind up there along with a couple of the former WLIR crew. That would be interesting...

Where does the station actually come in clearly? Can they boost it or does b101 or cool 102 prohibit tat from happening?
This is why I think hba is Hispanic broadcasting if it's more limited to urban range

The Harbor? The Bay? Variety Hits? Maybe some kind of rock?

Clear Channel has been launching some variety hits stations lately; Charlotte, Miami, Jacksonville all come to mind.

It didn't dawn on me until I read this post. But I'm starting to subscribe to that theory now too
(the fact that CC's Variety Hits stations are named after bodies of water with the exception of Miami is another thing to consider). Especially since Mike FM left the picture, there's another void in the market for Variety Hits.

You nailed it, no power increases, protection to WWBB and WCIB.

It's really not a bad signal at all, I do really well with it in the suburbs and parts of Boston. The only place I've ever had problems is around the Pru where the high-powered signals cause some receiver overloading.

Now that WODS is gone.... perhaps a simulcast with 101.5 in Providence or a local computer playing classic hits with the same voice tracked jocks.

WHBA could easily be "B101" Boston.

It seems to me that with the demise of Mike and "Oldies" 103 that a sort of Mike format would work.

They would have to compete with a more powerful WROR but WROR is very lame.

Ask yourself: Why did those stations fail?

Then ask yourself: Why would someone else try that format, knowing that it has already failed?

O.K. they failed because of the age demographic. Then what could be put on a signal that reaches only inner Boston and the North Shore?

Would they be so bold as to move Jamn to 101.7 and flip 94.5 to Country?

Jamn's appeal isn't strictly inner city. That's what sets hip-hop and related youth-oriented genres of black music apart from urban AC -- the suburban white kids have deserted rock in large numbers; their parents haven't. OK, if your intention is to migrate half of Jamn's audience to co-owned Kiss, why choose to pick a fight with WKLB on the frequency Jamn is to leave?

The playlist is tight, consistent and safe. That's pure gold in the PPM era, it keeps the radio on for long stretches as agreeable, inobtrusive background music.

O.K. let's think. Inner Boston and North Shore. Lynn, Salem. Not right wing talk. 1200 already covers more area than that.

That would leave Mia. Mia might actually work around here. But what to do with 1430 am?
