WFNX Boston doing a "Freeform Friday" May 13th

So WFNX boston is blessing their listeners today with a special "Freeform Friday" the 13th format today. DJ's actually get to PICK their songs (albeit with a smattering of a few newer currents kept in to keep balance, but what a concept, DJ 's PICKING SONGS (!) ;D) and the outcome has been amazing. Just some stuff that has been played: album cuts from The Black Keys, to classic 80's alt like New Order, Robbie Robertson and Black Flag, to indie rock like Afghan Whigs to Supergrass, to electronic/dance like DJ Shadow, Cut Copy, CSS, to hardcore/punk like At The Drive-In, Cave-In, to Wilco to My Morning Jacket to Killers B-Sides, it's all been played so far. I even heard The Beatles played this morning (On alternative, who knew :p They did inspire the genre quite a bit you know). My question is, why don't more alternative stations do special things like this? Kudos to WFNX for thinking outside the box and taking a chance (as usual, they are one of the top alt stations in the country IMO, since 1983). Everyone seems to be enjoying it as well on the FB page. THIS is what alternative radio should be about!

Amen to your post and to WFNX doing this, yet I don't see any female acts in the post or in the log at yes.com. Or much punk rock. Or any dance music. Or reggae. Or classic country. I could go on. Lots of Buffalo Tom tho lol. I think this all goes to show that the regular format of the defunct REV 105 in Minneapolis was subjectively speaking the best commercial alternative rock station in the history of the country (they played tons of Beatles btw :)

Really? Sorry to derail your post but yes.com doesn't even begin to brush the surface. Yes only picks up fairly known stuff, anything semi-obscure will not post, and I'd say 65-70% of the stuff played today didn't post. And you say they didn't play enough punk rock? How about, first you check out Julie Kramer's set. Which included stuff like Black Flag, The Jam, 360's, The Clash (Hitsville UK, NEVER heard anywhere), Buzzcocks. If that's not enough for you, how about you check out DJ Adam 12's set next, which, in the MIDDLE of the afternoon, he spun within an hour, a set of Boston local punk rock like Darkbuster, Dropkick Murphys (OLD, try circa 1997 with a different lead singer), Slapshot, Street Dogs that would not be played ANYWHERE but Boston, and it's a damn shame because they are among the best punk I've heard besides the West Coast stuff. (and they won't post on yes.com). Or even stuff like Quicksand, Refused, NOFX, hell Rocket From the Crypt. Didn't get enough females? How about acts like Lush, Lykke Li, Kate Bush, Siouxsie & the Banshees, to Blondie were some of the female artists played. Dance music? Paul Driscoll spun a whole club set between 7-8PM of different remixes. Justice vs. Simian's remix of "We Are You Friends" to a cool remix of current alternative hit "Young Blood" by Naked and Famous, The Cribs and CSS to name a few. These types of tracks are all spun at a Boston dance club night entitled "The Pill" that specializes in Indie Dance (unique and among the longest running, since 1997) http://www.thepillboston.com Or how about Boston band Freezepop that specializes in that type of Indie Dance being spun as well.
Just check out the DJ's logs on WFNX.com. There's several of them from today, you'll find that it's much broader then the playlist would indicate. I never heard Rev 105, but if they topped that alternative diversity then it's a shame they are off the air..which makes me glad stations like WFNX still are. And btw I HATE country..this is ALTERNATIVE ROCK! ;D

Sounds tight! Thx for the further details bro. Too bad it was only for one day and not an entire format but yeah supercool nonetheless. And yes Rev 105 was about good music, Led Zeppelin, Hank Williams Sr., Patsy Cline, Aretha Franklin, Johnny Cash, along with all the modern music you and I are talking about in this thread. Rock on!

WFNX is probably the lowest rated Alternative station in the country - whatever they're doing, I don't think anyone should copy it

Cuz we all know it's all about the ratings when it comes to alt music right ::) WBOS has the full power Class B signal, WFNx has the lower Class A, WBOS plays the hits and by default gets good ratings.. WFNX has never been about the ratings since the start.

Salad, it sounds like Rev might have leaned more AAA? Like a more eclectic WXRT? But that sounds really cool. Got any old archived playlists?

Yeah Rev 105 was alt rock all the way. It was only around for 3 1/2 years in the mid 90s. The artists mentioned above were just a tiny sample of the crazy huge variety this station aired. Name the genre, they probably played it at least once. Back in the day they were ahead of the curve on the electronic stuff, would play some hip-hop like Public Enemy from time to time, some metal, you name it. But these were just the "seasonings"; the main meal was alt. rock. It was a fascinating station to say the least. I've never heard anything even close to it before, during or since whether online or off. Indie 103.1 FM was nearly as good, in different ways. I have a Rev montage, would love for you to hear it PM me and I'll send it to ya.

Exactly. WFNX is devoted to serving a specific niche audience, and isn't trying to get huge ratings. Obviously the station must not be hurting the Phoenix's bottom line or else they would change the music or sell the station. I wish somebody with similar interests would purchase a NYC frequency (like, say, 101.9). It would be nice to have a station that's deeper and more purely alternative than most commercial modern rockers, while still being more streamlined than a college radio station.
