WFNX Could Have Saved Its Money

I have no interest in WFNX-FM's fate, but still it's interesting that they got no boost by moving their transmitter into the heart of downtown. One theory is that they did it to reach students at colleges close to town...but do they fill out diaries? 22

Back when I needed to follow these things, part of the sales pitch for WBCN and WCOZ and the other rockers was that college dorms weren't surveyed by Arbitron, which meant that their true audience was actually considerably higher than the book showed. And they were probably right.

I remember Arbitron, or one of the other radio rating services at the time, mentioning that they were going to start including dorms in their surveys, but I'm not sure if anything came of it.

Regards,
TSB

young people don't use pens or pencils anymore. only kepads on their i-phones and i-macs.
ppm's will solve some survey problems with college kids.they will hang them on beer bottles and bongs.

There is a problem with the alternative format that also effects younger demo rock stations and that is Arbitron will not admit they have a cell phone problem.
This situation grows more serious each day as more and more listeners either never
had a land line or just got rid of it
I recently perused our employee list of over 45 fulltimers and only 8 of us had home telephones.
I suspect WBCN and WAAF are also woefully underated.

As for the WFNX transmitter site move that was only part of the reason. Maximizing a facility while still possible added greatly to the asset value. this was
the number one reason I pursued the upgrade. With the demise of paging systems and the consolidation of MCI into Verizon, rooftop rents are such that we now pay less than the original lease on the old CBS tower in Medford

RE: College students.

Even if they never get diaries, they are a valuable reach--especially the huge college population in Boston--and will patronize advertizers, which is the bottom line.

And yes, in between (sarcasm mode on) lying around smoking dope all day, some actually buy food, clothes, electronics, go to clubs, etc.
