WFNX doubles its power

I see in Radio & Records that WFNX has moved to a new tower downtown and doubled its power ... to 6 KW, bygosh!

This would seem to be a good move for WFNX, would it not?

The question did occur to me, though: To what extent has low power hampered WFNX in the ratings?

The R&R piece includes an interesting quote from WFNX GM Andy Kingston:

"A huge number of WFNX's listeners either work or live in or around the city of Boston. The No. 1 complaint we get from these people is that they can't receive our signal in their home or office. I am thrilled to finally have a solution for them. Hopefully the only complaint will come from their neighbors asking them to turn down the music!"

WFNX-101.7's new signal should result in improved reception, but two questions need to be asked:

(1) Will the better signal result in significantly-better ratings??

(2) And for those south of Boston, will it affect reception of Providence's WWBB-101.5??

No, because they're directional away from both WWBB and WCIB. Their signal might now actually be worse down here in Hanson.

Not Yet. The HD equipment will be installed soon but the site will go up analog only at first.

I haven't tried WWBB here in Somerville since WFNX's move. I have one receiver, a behemoth analog Marantz from the mid-70's, that could actually separate first-adjacent WWBB from WFNX here in Somerville just a few miles from their former Medford/Malden transmitter, and it would get WWBB in stereo here if my rabbit ear antenna was placed correctly to more-or-less null WFNX.

None of my more recent digital tuning receivers could get even a trace of WWBB no matter what I did with the antenna. Just WFNX splatter, and Prudential intermod.

Since I'm on Spring Hill just a bit up from Union Square facing Boston, and Financial Place is practically line of sight from me on the Boston skyline a few miles away, I was worried that I might no longer be able to hear WWBB after the WFNX move/upgrade, but since WWBB just cancelled the only two shows I had recently listened to them for, "Little Walter's Time Machine" and Cool Bobby B's "Doo-Wop Stop", I've had no need to even make the effort to check. WWBB's current format seems to straddle music that's all played here on either WODS or WROR, so they're no longer offering anything I can't hear locally.

They suck in Framingham now..

They can hardly be heard at all there now...used to come in pretty good.

B-101 comes in great there. Even WCIB comes in now - about as good as WFNX.
