WFNX Makes Fun of Itself, Must Read These Boards

In one of their liner spots, they introduce new music by playing salsa, then say that haven't flipped to Spanish yet, and then play the new song. I thought it was quite clever and it immediately reminded me of board discussions here.

Now its kinda funny but when I used to call the station back in the 80's for requests, the DJ's seemed to have attitudes on the phone, but I guess that was all part of the stations image back then.

It should be mentioned that they would generally play my requests though. One time I wanted to hear Look My Way by the Vels. I made the request around 2pm. I actually waited several hours for it to be played. Then at 1am I called them to ask when they would play the song? I got into an argument with the DJ and he said that he didn't have to play the song, etc.

Ironically after I hung up it was the very next song played. It is my guess that one of the previous DJ's pulled it out but forgot to get it played at all. I was satisfied! 8)

retro, i'm not sure which is stranger - the fact that you requested The Vels or the fact that you listened for 11 hours to hear it when you could've played it at home cuz I'm sure that anyone who requests a Vels song already has the album!!

maybe you should've asked for "private world" instead...........

Well, it was the 80's and I was a little more naive then, besides 'FNX used to be my favorite station back then and radio was much better during that era as well. It was worth listening to all the stuff that WFNX played.

While most of "rock" radio still thinks fart sounds are funny and T&A are the two most important letters of a diary, FNX has brought the new punchline to radio. Today's liner should sound like a facebook staus update. FNX is radio for those who hate radio....and it's done very well

Oh, really...?

Is that why they are taking the market by storm? Is that why they are doing so well?

I would think WBOS or WMKK is more of an example or "radio, for those who hate radio"....and both of them do it much better.

I think Boston is fortunate in HAVING a station with a sense of humor....and actually plays music for that matter.....we used to have a comical, self depreciating station down here in Baltimore/DC.....the new music turned out to BE Salsa....and it hasn't stopped yet :'(

Fact: Yes, they do indeed read these boards. Another fact, some of them also do post on these boards...but i'm not posting any names ;D :p

Regarding the said promo, I have heard that one as well and their promo guy has some hilarious spots. I'm not sure of his name, they've mentioned him a few times on the Sandbox morning show, but I forget it off hand.

BTW, I was listening to WFNX tonite and I also think they are for people who hate radio. Earlier I heard the band Stellastarr* on FNX. You would never hear a band like that on any of the other stations.

So, people who hate radio love Stellastarr*?

Not necessarily. People who would love radio = love to hear the same familiar songs. People who hate radio = love stuff that doesn't get a lot of airplay.

Well to correct myself, I would say in most cases...but there obviously are people who are the opposite..

just think... in that time space, you could have gone to the record store, purchased the album and you wouldn't have to worry about them playing it on the radio ;D

Yeah, but back in the day, I was a teenager without much money. Capturing it off the radio made much better sense to me instead.
