WFNX no longer airing Sunday "Jazz Brunch"

Posted today as their last show on the station ever, the long-running Jazz show, "Jazz Brunch" with Jeff Turton on WFNX will air it's last show today, May 10, 2009. How long has this show been on the station? I can remember back at least to the early 90's. In a market with no full time Jazz station it was a good show to seek out that sort of music on a weekly basis. Sad to see a local specialty show go away.

I just listened / taped the last hour of the show and he said it was on for the station's full 26+ years. That is REALLY sad to see a show on for that long go away.

Any time I check WGBH-FM in the evening or some weekend hours, they're playing some form of jazz, and I think that's as much as the market appears to want. I don't know what the ratings during those hours are, or what percentage of donations those hours produce, but I suspect that WGBH-FM airs this programming as a public service. In a sense, the Boston area doesn't have a fulltime classical station worthy of the name either.

Didn't Turton come from another station before that, like WBUR or WERS?

Various college stations have jazz shows; ours at WMWM is Mood Swings and we also have a
Sunday night show with "chill music". Sometimes I'll play jazzier artists on my blues show--
Duke Robillard, Charles Brown, etc

Anyone know why the Jazz Brunch run has ended? Did the decision come from above, or has Jeff Turton chosen to hang up his headphones?

The former, not the latter. Jeff says he will be looking for another station for his show, however, unfortunately I believe I'll be surprised if he can find anywhere to do it other than on a volunteer basis nowadays, perhaps on a college or non-comm community station.

I hear that WGBH just "lost" three weekend and part-time jazz hosts. Ron Gill (left on his own), Al Davis and Kevin Ball (were "let go"). They're being replaced by weekend editions of Bob Parlocha's syndicated satellite jazz program, which already airs weeknight overnights. So they're obviously not hiring for jazz, and who else around here would pay for a jazz show nowadays?

And so ends a tremendous era and legacy of Boston radio programming.

Thank you Jeff Turton for giving up your 1,352 Sundays just to make ours more enjoyable.
