WFNX ratings down, again

Ok, this is another post that I thought about today while working at my real job. Why are people saying that Peter Gabriel is not part of WFNX's format? The reality of the matter is that 'FNX did indeed play Peter Gabriel back in the day, so to say it is not in format is quite questionable.

Like I said before, don't be so literal. Peter Gabriel is just an example of the odd shift in the WFNX playlist. Specificly "Salisbury Hill", a song that can be heard on adult contemporary stations like Magic 106.7.

I don't dispute that Peter Gabriel was quite edgy in his day. And there's lots to his material worth exploring for an alternative station. But of all his material, look at what makes it to WFNX: the same song you can hear on Magic.

Magic plays Salisbury Hill?

I don't think they do, or ever have. WZLX or WBMX maybe, but not Magic.

The Magic song you're probably thinking of is "In Your Eyes." Magic's sister 'BOS has played that one too since (and before) their flip from Triple-A to Alt-Rock.

Those Peter Gabriel songs test through the roof. That is why they are played. They test well to many different demos. They test to the AC P1, the Alt. P1, the AAA P1.

Yeah but listeners don't turn to WFNX to hear Adult Contemporary. They tune to WFNX for alternative. Wonderful if Peter Gabriel tests to different demos. The programmers at Mix 101.7 have watered down the playlist by focusing on crossover acts instead of "True Alternative".

Dude your obsession with this station is sick. Get over it. We get your point. They play Peter Gabriel. Big deal. They also daily play acts like Vampire Weekend, Flobots, The Ting Tings, MGMT, The Kooks and others that wouldn't even get a second of airplay on another station. So seriously. Enough.

Dude, don't waste your breath. Wannabe's and never-were's,
and never-will-be's will never get over it! All they want to do is
to blame others for their own problems, that they themselves cause,
and to further their own racist agenda...

Whatever "FNX plays - at least they spare us from even more of that
rap/hiphop junk. Thank you 'FNX! ;D

Peter Gabriel tests well to the WFNX P1. Gabriel tests well to Alt. listeners. Take a look at the modern rock charts of the 80s and 90s. You will see Peter Gabriel topping a few.

that song by the flobots drives me insane...but oddly....I like it

Everytime I hear that Flobots song I think of two things.... A robot with a Flobe hair cutting device for an arm, and "I can change the station on the radio, on the radio. I can change the station on the radio, on the radio." ;D

So how many more weeks until the Phoenix media empire collapses into bankruptcy, employee lawsuits and tales of cocaine deals to keep the radio DeLorean alive?

The Flobots song is reminiscent of King Missle's - Detachable Penis. As for them playing Peter Gabriel songs, does it really make a difference? Radio ain't brain surgry and that's obvious when you listen to FNX. I'd say more but my bedroom/the basement is flooding!

Would WFNX do better if it had Touch 106.1's format?

WFNX won't change format. Their format is designed to co-promote with their weekly entertainment newspaper (The Phoenix).

Even so, it's also questionable whether it would bill as well with the Touch format than with it's present format.

WFNX Won't Change Format, But I see alot of Hip Hop and R&B articles, In The Boston Phoenix( Slick Rick on the Cover this week, May 16-22 2008).

More like Cake's "The Distance"--like a semi-novelty song as opposed to a full-on one.

You say its pretty bad that FNX got beat by WBOS. How is that bad?

Well, WBOS is a station that has put virtually no effort behind their programming...and has show even less will to live and suceed. I dont think anyone is even home at that station....

WFNX by all indications is trying hard to get people to listen. And they get beaten by a station that is barely lifting a finger.

The only question that matters is "Does FNX make money"?

No, the only question is "Are they making enough money?"

Or "How much money do they have to make to justify the asset?".

They are failing that test...as Mindich could probably put the money into a CD and safely make as much.

There will be no going out of business, etc.

Depends on how long Mindich minds writing checks....
