Why did WFOM have so many gold records on their walls? Why did WFOM have a seventy record current playlist?
The answer to both questions is that WFOM was heavily involved in payola.

If they were into Payola (which I doubt) it would have been because they had some ratings. What record rep. would spend money on a station that could not result in some record sales!!

WFOM was involved in payola for a few reasons. One of the reasons was that WFOM was a parallel three Radio & Records reporting station and what WFOM added or didn't add influenced the playlists of many other top forty stations in many other markets. Record companies didn't care about WFOM because of their ratings or signal because both their ratings and signal were lousy. Record companies did care about getting on any parallel three Radio And Records reporting station because Radio And Records influenced what many program directors across the country would add out of the box. Forgetting WFOM's impact on the rest of the country, just about everything that was added to Z-93 and WQXI was first broken by WFOM. WFOM was very valuable to record company promotion people and they showed their gratitude in many ways.

didnt mean to make anybody mad. maybe you guys were in more label meetings than i was. at times kinda fun to watch.
gator would often fall asleep. some of those old label guys became good friends through the years.
some jocks got in trouble back in those days. some didnt.
