WFRL 1570 Freeport Changes

WFRL seems to now be simulcasting WEKZ-FM Monroe for morning drive and the noon hour from 12-1. They are still running ABC's "standards" format at other times.

What happened to Jeff Allen? Is he still part of WFRL/WFPS?

He was fired when Scott Thompson took control of the stations.

Thanks for the update. It doesn't surprise me that happened...considering Jeff didn't get along well with Jim Douglas and Don Werntz and I believe they are still part of Scott's crew.

No, that's not the reason he was fired.Jeff barely worked with Jim and Don, the three overlapped their work time in Freeport for about 18 months. The reason Jeff was let go was that his morning show was way better than Scott Thompson's and he knew it. It had nothing to do with Jim and Don, Scott knew Jeff was better and couldn't handle the competition.

Has the sale been finalized by the FCC, with the selling of WFPS/WFRL From Maverick Media to Green County Broadcasting that was supposed to be finalized as of June 1st,..by the by, formatics of the station now are just sub-par to keep up with any rockford radio

how do you know so much about wfrl and wfps? did you work with jeff, don and jim? jeff was probably let go cause he and tom liska always bashed the monroe radio stations. his laugh was just as annoying as scott thompsons laugh track. i heard that they had only a handful of employees just before thompson took over. radio works and maverick media didn't care about freeport. they didn't put anything into those stations. i hope that they dump the satellite feed on wfrl and go local with no simulcasting. it makes no sense to broadcast the same thing on both stations when 937 can be heard all over.

A local format on 1570 would be nice, but from a financial standpoint, I don't see that happening. It appears Scott Thompson is concerned primarily with the three FM's.

And you know this how? If there's one thing I love on these boards, it's people who think they have all the answers. Sure Rockford is/was a primary focus for those companies. Yet, the Freeport stations served their community quite well with local sports, news, support with local festivals and events, and more. How many other stations, no matter the market size, can say the same?

Sure it does. You think Scott Thompson's ego is going to inflate itself?Oh, and find the [shift] key on your keyboard.

I listened to Jeff Allen for years and I thought he was great I miss him dearly! Stop playa' hatein'

I also listened to Jeff alot, both the FM and AM show, I don't ever remember him, Tom, or Brad "bashing" Scott Thompson's moring show on the air? Other than mentioning Jeff's show did not have the aforementioned "annoying laugh track".The last week Jeff was on the air before his "departure", he never once mentioned Scott by name or that he was bitter towards the new management of the stations letting him go. I thought he was pretty classy considering he knew he was being shoved out by the competition. Sure WFRL and Freeport would be better served with a live and local daily show, but that takes money and talent. Correct me if I am wrong but don't all the Freeport/Monroe stations share the same 4-5 voices? With that few voices and so many hours to fill, you have to automate/voice trac most of the time. That's why I think all five of those stations sound exactly the same, minus the music.

Jim Douglas is EVERYTHING, that is wrong with radio. A jock that has no personality, and the adlib skills of a new born monkey. Hearing him back on the radio in Freeport is PERFECT. Dead town, dead stick, dead talent.
