WFRL is now simulcasting WEKZ-FM Monroe during the overnight hours. WFRL is satellite programmed "standards" and unmanned most of the day, so it's not a like it's a "cost cutting" move, Anyone know the reasoning behind this?

The story I heard was that RFL was totally on satellite with only one or two employees when it was purchased recently by a group led by Scott Thompson, who owns WEKZ-FM. Someone told me not too long ago that the station was completely trashed by previous ownership. My guess is they are trying to perk up listenership someway, use it as a supplement to pick up spot sales for WEKZ-FM and regain community confidence in Freeport until they figure out what to do with it.

WFRL is not simulcasting 937 overnight. as I am writing this they are still using the same boring satellite service. wonder if they will change format?

The satellite service is the ABC radio "standards" format. They had been simulcasting WEKZ-FM on overnights for a short time, but now simulcast 93.7 weekdays 6-9 AM and Noon-1 PM. Also the "Saturday Oldies Show" from 6-11 AM on the weekend.

WFRL has never done overnight simulcasting. If you've heard it....it may have been the engineer setting things up prior to beginning simulcasting. I can't tell you why Scott decided to simulcast, but I support his decision. If you have any questions concerning this issue, that is something you should address with him. Since 1998 when Radio Works took over WFRL, they switched to ABC's Stardust format. Very little attention has been paid to WFRL (which will celebrate its 59th anniversary this October). Without divulging TMI, positive changes are coming to a station that's long been ignored!

do you like people think they hear something and then run to this message board with wrong information and start posting away. What a bunch of clueless morons. Get the facts right or don't post at all. Oh I forgot most people are here are radio wannabes.

Don't know but I used to listen to the friday call in show. Not only did that leave when Jeff did but they don't even take any phone calls at all (Mayor's report for instance) How does that serve the public?

Hey guys I wanted to chime in... I have been watching this thread for a little while and am curious about Scott Thompson and his stations he is part owner of... There seems to be a lot of emotions tied to the stations he owns or baught... What were the stations like before Thompson started running the show... What was EKZ AM and FM like before it became a gold based AC... I know that the two radio works stations were MOR and Country... I don't know much about his business model, but like his way of doing things he seems to be trying to do what a radio station should be doing and that is covering the community... I know most of his station a VT'ed, but hell most of the Rockford stations are as well yet he seems to be right there with HS sports, election coverage, and eventhough not the best coverage was live on the air early in the summer with severe WX reports... The last time I checked that was what radio is all about... So the guy has a lot of dollor a hollor spots that is small town radio and he seems to be making something out of it... The station I worked for down in SC would be the same as EKZ... The difference is that we did a lot of live remotes which is something I don't hear much of of any of the "BIG" stations Thompson owns... Just couious about the history of Thompsons stations... CC

Really? That's what radio is all about? No listener phone calls and 1 full hour each day of a shopping show
If that's what commercial radio is all about no wonder XM and Sirius are so popular

You are right, XM and Sirius became popular because of this type of situation. Good think the FCC granted them licenses, but I believe there will only be one not two satellite providers in the near future.
