WFRN-FM translators

Is anyone concerned about the number of FM translators WFRN-FM (50-thousand watts) in ELkhart,IN has. Many of the translators are in their Main FM coverage area. I am not against religious broadcasters having translators if they are needed....but come on now. The WFRI and WFRR stations are 6 kw stations...and I hear WFRR Walton..ID's on the Winamac station 100.1 and vice versa. It seems WFRN does not keep tabs on what programming is airing over what transmitter from what little I have heard.

Yes, I've wondered about that for some time. Never could figure out how they got all those licenses. I have no issue with their program content. I do have an issue when I can go to three frequencies in this city (approximately 12 miles from their transmitter) and receive their primary signal as well as two 'translators'.

Regards,

I really enjoy WFRN and their programming, but it seems like having two translators in South Bend (96.1, 96.5) and one in Elkhart (101.9) is a little overkill.

On the other hand, their translators have some GREAT signals and definitely get out. The one in my town (101.1) can be heard 10-15 miles in any direction and can even be sniffed out of the static from nearly 40 miles away. Seems like if the translators do such a good job, the 104.7 signal would be just as good (for a 50kw signal) and wouldn't need the translators practically under the tower.

Practically under the tower? Checking licenses, WFRN has two translators on the same tower as 104.7. The one on 105.3 is used as a translator for their AM station (WCMR) the other (101.9) is WFRN-FM's main signal. 105.3 rebroadcast 104.7 before the FCC gave permission for the AM translation last year. Perhaps WFRN has something in mind for 101.9?

You have to get these licenses when they are available. If you wait until the "need" is there you may not get the channel.

As far as the South Bend/Mishawaka licenses, those two have been out there for over 10 years. I believe there was some intermod reason why WFRN wanted them. There are some areas that 104.7 fades along Ironwood Rd.

Those two stations are 100% simulcast ... to the point of when WFRI is off the air WFRR goes off too. Checking their website it appears that is exactly what WFRN is trying to do. The legal ID at the top of the hour mentions both stations.

Do have to give credit... who ever is in charge of snagging these translators up for Mr. Moore has done a great job, like it or not.

Also... the onair quality at FRN has had some significant improvements over the past couple years... the jocks keep things very interactive, the imaging has improved a bit, and the music selection is light years better...

I so wish we could just ban translators
Lemme guess ... LPFM fan or DX'r? I'm guessing DX'r with both LPFMs and FXs getting in the way. :D

well i am a dx'er lol, as far as LPFM it wouldnt be a bad service if it went for something useful (religious stations i dont consider useful since every area seems to have dozens of "full service" bible bangers)
Translators - waste of space something useful could have been put there (again totally abused by the bible bangers)

I just wish, especially since there is now a loophole to place HD2 onto a translator, that WFRN could put a bit more exciting format out besides their standard bland Inspo/Soft AC.
I would even be happy with (a locally branded?) WAY FM or something like that. As it is, I end up listening to distant signals of K-Love, as I drive around North Central Indiana.

Wayfm is more Christian CHR. In the South Bend market where 'FRN originates from, Pulse FM leans CHR but is mainly AC. WFRN is straight AC and from the 12+ numbers that I have seen, they mop Pulse up with 3 1/2 times the ratings.

Klove & 'FRN play basically the same music...

KLove plays less non-music. How many songs does WFRN manage to get into an hour of "music".

Sometimes I wonder if "music" stations are "misc" stations with all the stuff between the songs.

Down here in Kokomo, it's either WFRN (on two channels) or a distant K-Love signal.

Somehow, K-Love also has a more upbeat "Hot AC" presentation style, and while they do have short ministry spots, they don't stop the music so often, and so long, as WFRN seems to. Also I really can't stand "Sharing Life Together"- I'm sure someone must enjoy hearing tearful testimonies, and I guess the typical soccer mom must think it's great, but as a single male, it's not something I want to hear for entertainment.

I would be happy enough to have something like Pulse FM.
Or, any other type of Christian CHR format.
